“The Interview” has been the center of the controversial Sony hack. It was reported that the hackers who call themselves Guardians of Peace demanded that Sony block the film from being aired. The group also threatened movie theaters and potential moviegoers of an attack reminiscent of the 9-11 tragedy. It caused major theaters and Sony to opt not to air the movie on Christmas Day. But Sony surprised the world with its announcement to push through with “The Interview’s” release on Christmas Day.
Since its release, “The Interview” has earned $2.8 million from 331 theaters in its first four days and $15 million in online sales. According to Variety, the movie has also become Google’s bestseller in 2014 in its streaming sites including YouTube Movies and Google Play. The film can also be streamed on the film’s website, on Microsoft Xbox’s Video and on Apple’s iTunes.
In the movie, Rogen and Franco stars as reporters hired by the CIA to assassinate Kim Jong-Un has been called by North Korea as an act of terrorism. Since then, massive information has been leaked online, including sensitive information such as the salary and ID’s of directors and employees. A series of email exchanges between Scott Rudin and Amy Pascal also surfaced online, which mentioned a number of celebrity names including Angelina Jolie being called “a brat.” North Korea continues to deny involvement in the hack, but said the act was “righteous.”
Moreover, Rogen, Franco and Goldberg announced on Dec. 28, 2014 that they will be live tweeting during the premiere on Dec. 29, 2014. They said that it is a way of promoting the film and giving their fans more info about the movie. Franco and Rogen definitely did not fail to entertain its audience with their witty jokes and fun facts about the film as the fans watched “The Interview” along with the actors.
