Beyonce Knowles has been criticized over a photo on her social media feed showing her posing with her husband and daughter alongside a tiger cub in Thailand.

One of Forbes’ Celebrity 100 artists, Beyonce Knowles, came under fire for her photo with husband Jay-Z and daughter Blue Ivy playing with a baby tiger at a Thailand’s Phuket FantaSea Park. The photo of the family was posted on the “Dreamgirls” star’s Twitter feed during a pre-New Year’s holiday in Thailand.

The image, which shows them smiling, petting and bottle-feeding the tiger cub, has brought on the ire of wildlife protection activists, particularly the World Animal Protection Group.

“A tiger is not a plaything,” wildlife expert Dr. Jan Schmidt-Burbach said on WAP’s website. “Their health and well-being should not be sacrificed for a photo opportunity. When you look behind the scenes, holiday snaps like these support an industry that relies on animal cruelty.”

Dr. Schmidt-Burbach further said these animals are confined in cramped enclosures away from their mothers. She made special mention of a baby elephant Beyonce was photographed riding on to have likely been beaten by its handlers during the “breaking” period that consisted its training.

“It is not unlikely that this poor elephant will spend everyday after this one carrying other tourists, exposed to the extreme heat and weather of Phuket, knowing little but a life of pain and misery,” she continued.

According to the WAP’s site, 50 percent of tourists who shell out money for wild animal interactions aren’t aware of the abuse that occurs in zoos and parks where these animals are a staple attraction.

Celebrities, and in particular philantrophists like Beyonce and Jay-Z, aren’t the only ones who have been criticized for taking pictures with wild animals.

Popular boy band One Direction were also condemned after featuring a monkey in metal chains in one of their music videos.
