“The Big Bang Theory” Season 8 Episode 17 “The Colonization Application” aired on Thursday, March 5, 2015, at 8:00 p.m. on CBS. Sheldon and Amy are taking a big step, while Penny and Leonard engage in some creative art. Find out what happened in this episode in the recap below.
When Penny (Kaley Cuoco) and Leonard (Johnny Galecki) returned from playing miniature golf, they are welcomed by Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Amy (Mayim Bailik) with some exciting news. As the two hold hands, they announce that they are taking a step forward in their relationship. They’re getting a turtle!! As Sheldon says, they care enough for each other that it spills over their wanting to care for a reptile together, too. Big step, right? Leonard congratulates them for starting a “family.”
At the pet store, Sheldon and Amy pick out a pet turtle, Giuseppe, who’s going to live most days with Amy during Comic-Con or when Sheldon’s application for the Mars project is accepted. Hold on! This is the first time Amy learns of this plan. What is Sheldon talking about? Why couldn’t he have bothered Amy about it?
Meanwhile, Leonard makes a confession that he got Penny a belated Valentine’s gift from the dirty store. It’s something creative. They’ll cover themselves in body paint and then create art while naked and entwined. Penny is excited they are going to make some sexy art.
Raj (Kunal Nayyar) is at Emily’s, but she gets a message to go to the hospital, so she has to rush. So, while he waits for her to return, he calls up Howard (Simon Halberg), who’s playing video games while Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) does their taxes. While talking on the phone, Raj mindlessly opens Emily’s drawer and it’s now jammed and broken. He freaks out. She’s going to know he’s snooping!
The art piece Penny and Leonard came out with turned out to be bare and unexciting. They were out of breath, but it seemed like they didn’t create much at all. They’re not happy with the result. It’s boring. They decide to do it again. But somehow, Leonard gets into an accident and Penny is cleaning up his eyes in the bathroom. Later, they actually finished the piece and instead of hanging it, Penny suggests that they should give it to Sheldon and says it’s from William Shatner.
Amy and Sheldon didn’t bring home any turtles and they’re bickering as they arrive at the apartment. She’s still pissed about Sheldon’s plan of going to Mars. She says she’s hurt. Sheldon volunteered for a mission that would have him leave forever. Sheldon wonders how he can cheer her up, but she’s really mad. He prepares tea for her and they talk some more about Mars. Why does he even want to do this mission? He shows her the video he submitted to NASA. She’s unimpressed so far.
Meanwhile, Raj is taking instructions from Howard on repairing Emily’s drawer. He’s banging hammer and nails to fix it, when Emily walks in and he’s not yet done. He admits to what happened and she gets mad. They have their first fight. But in the end, they make up. Emily wonders, however, if Raj ever looked at her closet…and now he can’t get it off his mind. What is in there?
Still upset at Sheldon, Amy says to her boyfriend that she thought getting a turtle meant something in their relationship. She thought it was a start to planning their future together. Sheldon points out they can still do that. Planning their future together doesn’t mean they plan it on Earth, right? He’s asking her to go to Mars, too. That gets her to smile and she hugs Sheldon. They go back to the apartment to prepare her application. A couple submission. She’s excited about the prospects of their many firsts. Their kids would be Martians, how about that?
In the end credits, a photo of Leonard Nimoy was flashed bearing the caption “The impact you had on our show and on our lives is everlasting.” It’s a tribute to the actor who died last Feb. 27, 2015. Nimoy was beloved by the characters in the series and lent his voice to a storyline in a previous season.
