“The Big Bang Theory” Season 8 Episode 16 “The Intimacy Acceleration” aired on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2015 at 8:00 p.m. on CBS. While Penny and Sheldon are doing an experiment together, Amy, Leonard, Raj and Emily figure out an escape room. Howard and Bernadette, meanwhile, return home from the funeral. Find out what happened in this episode in the recap below.
Amy (Mayim Bialik) reads something about a social experiment that suggests people can fall in love in a matter of minutes simply by answering questions and staring at each other. Sheldon (Jim Parsons) predictably disagrees with this. He says he can challenge this by doing his own experiments with people in the streets, but Penny (Kaley Cuoco) volunteers to be part of Sheldon’s experiment instead. They will prove whether the psychology behind this is true.
As the two prepare, Raj (Kunal Nayyar) wonders to their significant others if they are not worried about testing fate; Sheldon and Penny could fall in love. But Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Amy have tried a few of the questions out themselves and think that whatever Raj is concerned about, it is never going to happen with Sheldon and Penny. Meanwhile, as they have some free time, they all agree to go to this escape room Raj’s girlfriend Emily (guest star Laura Spencer) suggested.
And so, Penny and Sheldon begin their experiment with easy questions: Who would you want to spend dinner with? What would constitute a perfect day for you? But when poised with the question, “what ability or quality would you like to possess?” Penny mockingly replies that she’d like to turn water to wine. Sheldon detects she’s using humor to cover up for something. Time to fess up and be honest!
Penny says that in truth, she wishes she was as smart as them, while Sheldon admits that being smart isn’t such a big deal sometimes. He still can’t get it when someone is telling or joke or just being sarcastic. So, for his answer, the quality he would like to possess is the ability to read someone’s mind. Hearing this, Penny changes her answer to wishing that she could possess the ability to make things simpler for Sheldon. He’s touched by this thought and concern from his friend.
Later, another question leads Sheldon to admit that it’s his actually birthday that day, a fact that no one knows, not even his girlfriend Amy. Penny is shocked and pleased at the same time. He finally shares this secret with her!
As this is going on, Raj and the rest expertly solve the puzzle in the escape room. It was while ignoring the “zombie” that’s supposed to distract them from successfully figuring things out. Because of their academic training, they did the puzzle in under six minutes. Leonard feels bummed and cheated that they paid $200 for such an easy challenge. The zombie isn’t fun nor scary either.
Meanwhile, Howard (Simon Halberg) and Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) are back home after attending Mrs. Wolowitz’s funeral in Florida. They find out that the luggage where they packed her ashes are missing and Howard practically goes ballistic at the airport staff. They sit in the lounge and wait for good news. Howard tells his wife he regrets that he wasn’t able to drive his mother to the airport when she traveled to Florida. He was too busy then. It would’ve been the last time he’d spend time with her.
Feeling her husband’s pain, Bernadette secretly approaches the airport staff to tell her, or more like threaten her, that they better find the luggage because one way or another, they’re walking out of the airport with a dead woman.
Back at Penny’s apartment, the last phase of the experiment involves having to stare at each other for four minutes. This part makes Penny super awkward that she couldn’t concentrate. It’s creeping her out. Meanwhile, Sheldon makes another confession: he regards Penny as a sister and sometimes even as a mother. She pauses to reflect on the first day she met Sheldon and Leonard, which he remembers, as clear as day.
After their experiment, Penny tells Sheldon that she’s happy they did this together as she feels a different level of closeness with him now. She’s not, however, in love with him and Sheldon admits to the same sentiments. He and Penny return to his apartment, whereby the others greet him with a surprise birthday party.
Meanwhile, the airport staff finds the missing luggage. Howard checks his mom’s urn and makes a promise he will keep this close to him for the rest of his life, much to Bernadette’s regret. She’s sure that the urn will be in her bedroom from now on.
