The future of the Big Hero 7 remains uncertain despite the critical and box office success of the first movie, Big Hero 6. Years after the cuddly healthcare provider Baymax captured the hearts of fans worldwide, work on the sequel is yet to begin. Find out why.

Tough Act To Follow

Big Hero 6 was based on the comic book series of the same title published by Marvel. It follows a group of young heroes who use their genius to create gadgets that can help protect their city, San Fransokyo. The movie starred Scott Adsit as Baymax, Ryan Potter as Hiro, Daniel Henney as Tadashi, Jami Chung as Go Go, Damon Wayans Jr. as Wasabi, Genesis Rodriguez as Honey Lemon, T.J. Miller as Fred and Alan Tudyk as Alistair Krei. It also featured a cameo from Stan Lee.

The animated feature released in 2014 grossed $657.8 million at the global box office. It even won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature as well as nominations from the BAFTA and Golden Globes. So why does it not have a sequel yet?

Movie producer Roy Conli has stated in a previous interview that, while they have already discussed the sequel, its fate is still up in the air. He and directors Chris Williams and Don Hall are still looking for a story that can be adapted to the big screen and will have the same impact as the original.

Considering that the movie is based on a comic book series that has a long history (the superhero group first appeared in print in 1998), Disney has a lot of material to work with. However, the studio already has decided to bring the superhero team to television later this year.

Switching From The Big To The Small Screen

In March 2016, Disney announced that a Big Hero 6 television series was in development. Mark McCorkle and Bob Schooley, the brains behind Kim Possible, were tapped to helm the series.

The majority of the movie’s cast also signed up to reprise their characters on the television series. Only Miller who played the role of Fred and Wayans who played Wasabi will not be returning. Instead, Brooks Wheelan and Khary Payton will take over their roles.

On January, Disney released a teaser. Watch below:

Bringing the young superhero team to the small screen might not be such a bad idea despite the original movie’s performance at the box office. Marvel releases a new superhero movie every three months or so and by releasing Big Hero 7, Disney might risk competing with its own products.

Moreover, the studio still has a slew of new animated movies and anticipated sequels as well as live-action adaptations of popular animated classics planned to be released in the next few years. Titles such as Coco, Gigantic, Toy Story 4, Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck It Ralph 2, The Incredibles 2 and Frozen 2 fill up Disney’s calendar for the next four years.

Will Big Hero 7 Happen?

However, fans should never lose hope. The Incredibles, a movie about a superhero family which also received critical and box office success, was also without a sequel for over a decade. The animated movie was released in 2004, but The Incredibles 2 will not come out until 2018.

It might take Disney a long time before the studio hears how much fans wanted Big Hero 7 to happen. In addition, without even airing one episode, Disney XD already renewed the Big Hero 6 TV series to Season 2 which means that the superhero team would have to stay on the small screen a little longer.

Big Hero 6 TV series will air on Disney XD by fall this year.
