After the star-studded 56th Grammy Awards, there’s still another music awards event for those who didn’t get the chance to nab the prestigious award or “a gold sippy cup” (according to Jay Z) last January 26, 2014. They can have a short at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards (BBMA)! The annual Billboard Music Awards will be held on May 18, 2014 at 8 p.m. at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. It will be aired live on the ABC Network. Read on to find out more about the Billboard Music Awards 2014, including the nominees.

Billboard, the music chart/magazine behind the iconic awards event since 1894, recently announced the full list of nominees in 40 categories for the Billboard Music Awards 2014 on Wednesday, April 9, 2014. The announcement was made with the help of “Talk Dirty” hitmaker Jason Derulo on “Good Morning America.” Derulo is also the first confirmed performer at the upcoming BBMAs.

According to Billboard, the list of nominees or finalists, were based on the yearly “key fan interactions with music, including album and digital singles sales, radio airplay, touring, streaming and social interactions on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, VEVO, Spotify and other popular online destinations for music.”

First-time BBMA 2014 nominees as well as up-and-coming music act Imagine Dragons and New Zealand hitmaker Lorde are battling for the top of the pack with 12 nominations each. “Suit and Tie” singer Justin Timberlake comes in second with 11 nominations and Katy Perry got the third place with ten nominations. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, the hip-hop indie duo who reaped awards at the 2014 Grammys, nabbed eight nominations.

Billboard Music Awards 2014 will also include Milestone Awards, which was first included in 2013 to give honor to the musicians who have given “ingenuity and innovation” to their craft. The 2014 nominees for the Billboard Music Milestone Awards are the Las Vegas rock act Imagine Dragons, John Legend, country crooner Luke Bryan, One Republic, Ellie Goulding and Carrie Underwood.

In this special awards category, fans will have the chance to vote for their favourite artists and they can be qualified to be picked to present the said award live alongside former Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland.
