The winners of the Gotham Independent Film Awards were announced on the evening of Dec. 1st 2014.The ceremony is held every year to honor the very best in independent filmmaking every year. The ceremony held at Cipriani Wall Street in New York. Alejandro González Iñárritu's “Birdman,” earned the top honor winning Best Feature award and earning Michael Keaton a Best Actor trophy. “Birdman,” has beaten a field that included Richard Linklater‘s “Boyhood,” which had won the top trophy from the New York Film Critics Circle. Other contenders for Gotham's top award included “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Love Is Strange” and “Under the Skin.”
Julianne Moore won best actress awards for “Still Alice.” In the show's first awards, Tessa Thompson was named Breakthrough Actor for her role in “Dear White People,” while Ana Lily Amirpour won the award as Breakthrough Director for “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night.”
“Boyhood” won the audience award, which was selected by audience vote from among the 15 films nominated in the Best Feature, Best Documentary, and Breakthrough Director categories.
Uma Thurman hosted the show. Special tributes were handed out to actress Tilda Swinton, “Foxcatcher” director Bennett Miller and Netflix chief Ted Sarandos.
