“Black-ish” Season 1 Episode 13 “Big Night, Big Fight” aired last Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2015, at 9:30 p.m. on ABC. It’s Valentine’s Day, and Dre plans on giving Bow the perfect night out. But as usual, it doesn’t end up right. Find out what happened in the recap below.
For Dre Johnson (Anthony Anderson), the pressure around making Valentine’s Day perfect is causing a lot of tension in relationships. It’s true for his relationship with his wife Bow (Tracee Ellis Ross). Ever since they spent their first Valentine’s together in 2000, they always ended up having something to argue about. But this year, Dre is committed to making everything peaceful and perfect.
Dressed in his best clothes, Dre saunters over to his wife with a lovely bouquet of flowers and says something casual to her about her clothes. Only, Bow thinks it’s an insult. And just like that, the mood is ruined. There goes his plan for a peaceful Valentine’s!
In the car, Dre asks for a do-over, and Bow admits that maybe she overreacted.
Soon after, Dre and Bow are at a crowded restaurant without any reservation, as he changed plans the last minute after hearing Bow complain that they always do the same things. He smooths it over with the guy at the reception so that they can get their table. Never mind if it’s not the best area in the restaurant.
They look at the menu, and Dre, as usual, takes a lot of time to order. Because of this, the short ribs Bow wanted to order already ran out. Irritated, she calls her husband a “ruiner.” What did she mean by this? Bow enumerates Dre’s past transgressions, which made him really upset, he marches to the restaurant’s bathroom.
While there, an old man points out to Dre that he’s not alone, as there are four or five husbands and boyfriends with him looking really sad. He’s not the only one with problems with their significant other. The bigger the night, the bigger the fight.
The old man tells Dre that he’s actually the victim and that he should work up her guilt up so he can get an apology, maybe even special sex. Dre plans an elaborate emotional manipulation, but when he returns to their table, Bow immediately says she’s sorry and that she’s rising above the pettiness.
This would have been fine, except Dre wouldn’t have it. He wants Bow to apologize for more, for her mistakes done years ago. They argue loudly this time, and it is World War III inside the restaurant.
Dre and Bow return home from their disaster dinner and imagine what would’ve happened had they behaved differently early on. But Dre realizes that sometimes, having a big argument is good for the relationship. Bow actually agrees with him as this does away with resentments. From now on, they intend to look at Valentine’s Day as their Fight Night, with the make-up sex to look forward to.
Meanwhile, the kids at home take out the Valentine’s cards they received from class, and Diane (Marsai Martin) wonders why her brother seems to have gotten a lot more than she did. Junior (Marcus Scribner) tells her it’s probably because she’s pretty mean, and true enough, she starts insulting her siblings.
So they teach her how to say a compliments by letting her write down her thoughts or by having her compliment the pizza delivery guy who looks like a mutant. It’s a struggle for Diane, and in the end, she says that saying compliments and being nice is not who she is. She doesn’t want to fake it.
