“Black-ish” Season 1 Episode 10 “Black Santa/White Christmas” aired on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2014 at 9:30 p.m. on ABC. Dre badly wanted to be Santa this year and Bow wanted to take care of the Christmas feast. Not everything went as planned. Find out what happened in this episode in the recap below.
Dre (Anthony Anderson) have always loved Christmas for the presents, the traditions, and his mom’s homemade cooking. But Dre loved Christmas most of all because of one man — Santa Claus! He was the first white man he’s ever loved, although, as a child, his mother discouraged him from believing in Santa.
At his office, there was one man who played the role of Santa every year and he really looked the part. But it wasn’t happening this time around because Fred, the Santa guy, collapsed and died. So now, Dre would like to take over that role at the Christmas party at Stevens & Liddo. And why not? He’s fun and he loves the kids, just like jolly old St. Nick!
Ruby (Jennifer Lewis), Dre’s mother, who was visiting the family, heard this and discouraged Dre because Santa was white. But Dre insisted the office needed a black Santa since there were black adoptive kids coming.
Dre: This is my opportunity to show these kids Santa can look like them.
The younger kids overhead this and started wondering. Bow explained that their dad would just like to help out Santa, so he’s dressing up as him.
Diane: But we’ll still get presents from the real Santa, right?
Jack: The white one?
Back at work, Dre suggested to his boss that they should get a Santa who would be more diversified. Good idea then! So he got Angelica (Ana Ortiz) from HR to play the part. How diversified was that? She’s Mexican and she’s a woman. Good call!
Dre arrived home from work to share his frustrations about not being picked as Santa.
Dre: I don’t have a problem with a woman being a Santa, other than it being insane. But a Mexican?
Bow: Are you saying a Mexican can’t be Santa?
Ruby: No way, Jose. Not yet! We’ve been waiting longer.
Dre: My momma’s right. There’s supposed to be a black Santa before a Mexican Santa. Just like the presidency!
Ruby: Mexicans can’t be jumping the line. It’s bad enough they started taking black people’s jobs.
Dre and Ruby went on and on but they sure weren’t being racist by dissing the Mexicans. They reasoned, they were black, they can’t possibly be racist. They drove Bow (Tracee Ellis Ross) crazy.
So at work, Dre came up with a plan to unseat Angelica. All it took was to have their boss hear her do her Santa laugh. It was bad, so she was out. And Dre, happily, got the part. The fat suit was gonna have some use!
Meanwhile, Bow decided that she would be taking care of Christmas dinner this year. The children were less than enthusiastic because Grandma Ruby was better at this Christmas stuff, plus she makes the best meals. But Bow was insistent. She also helped the kids prepare for their number for Dre’s office party. But, sadly, the kids were tone deaf. So, to fix this, the kids did their presentation with Bow auto-tuning their number.
Bow thought she had Christmas dinner in the bag and was mighty proud of what she has done. However, seeing that she kind of ruined Christmas for the kids. They were really looking forward to Ruby’s feast. Bow compromised with her mother-in-law, who was more than willing to prepare a new set of Christmas dinner. Bow came home to check on her. She found out that for the last ten years, Ruby’s homemade cooking was actually prepared by none other than a Mexican! She ordered these from her!
Turned out, preparing a Christmas feast was too much work for Ruby and Mexicans were dependable and cheap! But they could not ruin the Christmas for the kids. They needed to put up with the pretense. So the two moms got to “work” and made the kitchen messy, as if they prepared the food themselves.
Now, Dre’s Santa debut was less than stellar, because he forgot to prepare the presents for the kids. Actually, Angelica “forgot” to tell him this when she was stripped off the role. This was her payback. To fix the problem, Dre and his kids to shop for Christmas presents, as they still have some time. Then they went from house to house to give these to the adoptive kids.
And when it was all done, they went home to celebrate by eating Ruby’s feast. But Dre wondered — why were there boxes of Mexican takeout food in the garage?
