Black-ish” Season 1 Episode 16 “Parental Guidance” aired last Wednesday, March 4, 2015, at 9:30 p.m. on ABC. The Johnsons are set to renew their vows, but their parents are ruining the event. Find out what happened in the episode in the recap below.

It’s the 15th wedding anniversary of Dre (Anthony Anderson) and Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross) and Dre reminisces to that time when they got married at the hospital chapel since Bow’s residency was in full swing. This time, he’s thinking of having a renewal, so he can give his wife the actual party she deserves. But then, at five in the morning, Bow’s parents arrive and it begins to seem that this is going to be a problem.

While his relationship with Bow’s parents is civil, there exists a mutual dislike for each other. He’s wondering why they’re here for the vow renewal. Dre’s parents are also staying in the Johnson house for the renewal and they’re equally surprised that Bow’s parents are in town.

Meanwhile, Zoey (Yara Shahidi) learns though her grandmother that her mom got pregnant with her before her parents married and she’s feeling bad about being lied to. Pops (Laurence Fishburne) calls out Alicia (Anna Deavere Smith), Bow’s mom, for hurting the child with the truth. Ruby (Jenifer Lewis), Dre’s mom, isn’t happy with her either.

The kids try to comfort Zoey, who seems to already be adjusting after talking to her parents about the truth. Junior suggests their parents might just be over compensating. Perhaps, her real father is the famous Rick Fox, because she looks better than her siblings. What does she think about that?

The adults are playing Scrabble in the living room when Junior discovers that the website that ordained Alicia, who officiated the first wedding, is under FBI investigation. Does that mean they are not really married? Only Zoey is pleased by this thought. That means her brothers and sister are also bastards just like her. The kids’ world is shattered.

Dre believes that this was done in purpose. So, he proposes to turn the vow renewal into an actual wedding. Meanwhile, they talk to their children about their part in their “first wedding” and it gets everyone excited. Problem solved! How about the parents?

During dinner, their parents get into a debate about how each of them raised Bow and Dre the right way, but the two quickly shoots down any argument. Their families are different, but they are still family. Shouldn’t that matter more? Pops disagree. He knows Bow’s family looks down on Dre’s family. The debate goes on and on, then it ends with Dre and Bow fighting between each other.

The mothers talk to their children in private, each convincing Bow and Dre to get out of a lonely marriage. That night in bed, the couple concede that their parents are driving them crazy. Can’t they just get married without them? Bow suggests going to the court house with the kids. However, the twins spills the secret to Pops.

Pops breaks the news to Alicia and surprisingly, she agrees that perhaps they have ruined the moment for their children. To make up for it, they decide to put the wedding back on by taking care of the preparations.

During the wedding ceremony, Alicia speaks up to say that although they may never get along as family, they remain a family because they are united in their love for Dre and Bow. Aww. Isn’t that actually nice? Then Bow and Dre say their vows from the heart and became husband and wife for real. Congratulations, you two!
