“Black-ish” Season 1 Episode 2 “The Talk” will air on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014, at 9:30 p.m. on ABC. Dre and his son, Andre Jr. (or Andy), will have “the talk,” but this will not go according to the way Dre would like it. Read on for further details about this episode, but before that, let’s run through what happened in the previous week.
In the “Pilot” (air date: Sept 24, 2014), Dre Johnson (Anthony Anderson) was promoted to Senior Vice President (SVP) at his work at the advertising firm Stevens & Lido. Good news right? Not quite so. Dre was slightly disappointed that he would be the SVP for its Urban Division, which meant he’s the guy who’ll head the “black stuff.” So in submitting a proposal for a client, he presented a video that depicted black people in its most common stereotype. His boss was not impressed.
Dre was also disappointed about how his son is growing up. Almost 13 years old, it looked like Andre Jr. (Marcus Scribner) was losing his roots, his foundation, his identity and heritage. Why would Andre Jr. even want a Bar Mitzvah or join field hockey tryouts when they are black?
His wife, Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross), reminded him to keep things real, as she was sure he would also be disappointed if the company assigned a white guy to the Urban Division, knowing a black guy would be better suited. She also wanted Dre to lay it easy on their son, when she saw that Dre performed a wild African passage ceremony for Andre Jr.
In the end, Dre made up for this by giving his son a “Bro Mitzvah,” when he realized that all junior really wanted was to belong with his peers and be popular with the girls. It had nothing to do with losing his identity; it had everything to do with becoming a teenager.
At work, Dre also presented a video that his boss loved. It showed the hip, cool and colorful vibe of what it is to be black, a real representation of his family.
