The Blacklist” Season 2 Episode 21 “No. 55: Karakurt” aired last Thursday, May 7, 2015 at 10:00 p.m. on NBC. In this episode, FBI Special Agent Elizabeth “Liz” Keen (Megan Boone) and the rest of the team raced against time to find the Russian assassin known as Karakurt (Michael Massee) before he accomplishes his mission, which would set up the world for another Cold War. Meanwhile, Tom Keen (Ryan Eggold) tried to have hope that he and Liz would reconcile, and Liz continued to dig into her past. Read on to learn more about this episode.

The episode began with a college student, who began convulsing and died soon after he signed a petition for the Patriot Act. Afterwards, the man organizing the petition told someone over the phone that they were ready to initiate the second phase.

That morning, in Washington D.C., Tom Keen (Ryan Eggold), after the events of the night before, in which FBI Special Agent Elizabeth “Liz” Keen (Megan Boone) had gone to him for comfort, suggested that they try to start over again with the real him. However, she left after Raymond “Red” Reddington (James Spader) called her up as he had a new lead.

At his safe house, she told him that she was going to get to the truth about her mother, Katarina Rostova, a former KGB spy. Red then told her that thanks to the torture of the Russian Consulate’s aide, they discovered that Karakurt (Michael Massee) was in the country and was going to attack a military defense installation under the Cabal’s orders, in order to set up the Kremlin for the attack so that the United States would launch itself and Russia into another Cold War, as Karakurt was also used by the Kremlin to do their dirty work.

FBI Special Agent Donald Ressler (Diego Klattenhoff) and Liz then went to OREA, the CIA substation for Russia and Europe, and informed them of what they knew, but the section head proved to be uncooperative. However, before they left to go back to the Task Force, one of the agents followed them out and gave them a recorded conversation that their own informant, a member of the Old Guard, had recorded the night before. This man owned a restaurant nearby, and told Liz that she might be able to find more about Katarina from him. However, as far as he knew, Katarina Rostova was a myth and legend.  Before they got into their car, they received a call from Agent Samar Navabi (Mozhan Marno) who informed them that Red had just discovered that Karakurt had fashioned an ANFO IED that was in a white truck. However, before they could do anything, they realized that the truck was just in front of the OREA building, which then explode, killing all of the agents inside.

Afterwards, they were sent by Red to the apartment building where Karakurt was staying at. However, Tom Connolly (Reed Birney) used his leverage against FBI Assistant Director Harold Cooper (Harry Lennix) to redirect Ressler and Liz to Union Station instead, which he reluctantly did.

There, Liz, while chasing after a man wearing the same sweatshirt as their only, grainy, existing photo of Karakurt, got tackled by him, but was alright. As it made no sense, Cooper revealed his dilemma to Red, who told him to continue like nothing was wrong, so that they could build a case against him.

After discovering that the man Karakurt had spoken to was a virologist named Dr. Leo Andropov, whose house had a secret genetics laboratory in it, Liz and Red paid a visit to Dr. Ginger Lumiere (Noelle Beck). While waiting, Liz ignored a call from Tom, who asked her out on a dinner date the next day as Jacob Phelps, his real self, and she told Red that she was going to talk to the owner of the Russian restaurant about her mother. Afterwards, Ginger informed them that the virus that would be used as the murder weapon would be very specific, as it would be customized to target one specific person.

On the way back, Liz realized that Karakurt was going to target the memorial service for the fallen agents at OREA. They then discovered that Senator Hawkins was the target, as a college student, his illegitimate son turned test subject, had died recently.

Red then told Cooper to reveal to Connolly that Cooper’s people knew how and what the attack was going to be in an attempt to call it off.

At the memorial service, Liz and one of Hawkins’ men took him away before he could shake hands with Karakurt, who had disguised himself as a reporter. However, while being driven away, he began to convulse.

Red then discovered, after talking to the Russian restaurant owner, that several men form the Justice Department had been asking about Katarina’s daughter, which led Red to call Liz up to tell her that she had been set up as a Russian spy due to her parentage, as she had been the carrier, all along, which was why Karakurt’s blood came up negative for the virus.

Red then told her to get out just as Connolly walked into the building.
