“The Blacklist” Season 3 Episode 3 “No.  72: Eli Matchett” aired last Thursday, Oct. 15, 2015, at 9:00 p.m. on NBC. In this episode, former FBI Special Agent Elizabeth “Liz” Keen (Megan Boone) and Raymond “Red” Reddington (James Spader) went back into the United States in order to gain leverage over a company that is tied to the Cabal, despite the risk of FBI Special Agent Donald Ressler (Diego Klattenhoff) and Mossad Agent Samar Navabi (Mozhan Marno) always being at least a step or two just right behind them. Meanwhile, Tom Keen (Ryan Eggold) came out of the woodwork, ready to help, and Harold Cooper (Harry Lennix) decided to take matters into his own hands as Liz kept on getting deeper and deeper into Red’s world. Read on to learn more about this episode.

The episode began with a man, who, later on will be identified as Gabriel Costa (Gabriel Sloyer), an employee of Verdiant Industries, and who was  working in league with a group of disgruntled farmers bent on destroying Verdiant, the company that caused all of them to go bankrupt, murdering several Verdiant employees in order to get his farmer friends in.

There, they managed to steal a cache of files on a top secret project called the “Genesis Project.” It also contains information regarding how the Verdiant genetically modifies their corn.

However, after a while, Eli Matchett (Don Harvey), the leader of the group, killed everyone else inside, and went down to a laboratory. A scientist of his was working on a virus that would be devastating to crops all around the world.

Meanwhile, Tom Keen (Ryan Eggold) confronted FBI Special Agent Donald Ressler (Diego Klattenhoff), and offered his help in order to help former FBI Special Agent Elizabeth “Liz” Keen (Megan Boone), his ex-wife. However, Ressler refused, and instead, decided to pursue a new lead that had just come in.

It turned out that Raymond “Red” Reddington (James Spader) and Liz had been inside a container heading towards Spain, but had turned around and was headed somewhere West.

Liz and Red actually went to Iowa, in order to look for Eli Matchett and get the files that he had stolen from Verdiant Industries, so that they could gain leverage over the Cabal. The Cabal laundered its money through Verdiant, through the company’s Chief Technology Officer, Susan Hanover (Cindy Katz).

As soon as Ressler heard that there had been a major break in at a particular Verdiant Facility, they decided to head out West as well.

Meanwhile, Red reached out to Glen Carter (Clark Middleton) to find Dembe Zuma (Hisham Tawfiq). He hadn’t been at the rendezvous point as he had been abducted by Mr. Solomon (Edi Gathegi), and who began torturing a friend of Dembe’s. Glen finally discovered this at the end of the episode.

After talking to some farmers that Eli knew, Red and Liz headed towards their inside man’s, Costa’s apartment. They found a cache of files hidden in a vent, one of which contained a top-secret file called the “Genesis Project.”

Ressler and Mossad Agent Samar Navabi (Mozhan Marno) just barely missed them, but Liz made the mistake of calling Ressler to ask him to step down.

Red and Liz then managed to discover the location of Eli’s other base, a feed storage in Wilson Park. Liz began the process of downloading the information that they needed. However, thanks to Liz’s call, they weren’t able to complete downloading everything.

During a pit stop at a nearby restaurant, they were recognized by a State Trooper whom Liz ended up shooting in the chest.

However, they did bring him to the Emergency Room before fleeing that area.

Meanwhile, Navabi and Matchett managed to piece everything together and realized that Matchett, who had lost his land to Verdiant, along with many others, was going to begin spreading the virus on the land that had been taken from him. However, they managed to stop him just in time.

At the same time, Red and Liz realized that the entire thing had been orchestrated by Hanover.

The plan was to unleash the virus, which was why she provided Matchett with a virologist. It was so Verdiant could come upon the scene with a genetically modified scene immune to the virus so that they could rake in profits from that.

Red then confronted Susan and told her to warn the Director that he was coming and told her to tell the Cabal to exonerate Liz.

Meanwhile, Liz, via fax told Ressler to check out Verdiant’s Silver Ridge warehouse, where all the new seed was stored.

Afterwards, Liz realized that she was getting deeper and deeper into Red’s world, and Harold Cooper (Harry Lennix) decided to take matters into his own hands after talking to Ressler, by meeting up with Tom, with an assignment for him in order to help clear Liz’s name- to hunt down Karakurt.

How much farther do you think Liz will go into Red’s world? What will happen to Dembe and Tom? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
