“The Blacklist” Season 3 Epsiode 2 “No. 80: Marvin Gerard” aired last Thursday, Oct. 8, 2015 at 10:00 p.m. on NBC. In this episode, after former FBI Special Agent Elizabeth “Liz” Keen’s (Megan Boone) plan to seek asylum in Russia didn’t go as planned, the FBI staked out a restaurant after a tip came in that both Raymond “Red” Reddington (James Spader) and Liz were inside. However, while a sequence of events followed, which included a hostage situation, the FBI didn’t realize that there was more to things than meets the eye. Read on to learn more about this episode.
The episode began with former FBI Special Agent Elizabeth “Liz” Keen (Megan Boone) surrendering herself to the Russian Embassy. She femanded to speak to the most senior intelligence official in the building, as she claimed that she was a deep cover operative named Masha Rostova.
She then gave him intelligence on Karakurt and the Cabal. She promised more information once she was given a written guarantee that she would have diplomatic immunity.
However, the higher ups wanted to talk to her in Moscow, but in reality, the guards in the embassy were in cahoots with Matheus Solomon (Eli Gathegi). He was planning on abducting her before she boarded her plane.
Raymond “Red” Reddington (James Spader), after blackmailing the Russian Ambassador to the United States, discovered that she was going to be delivered right into the hands of the Cabal, and warned FBI Special Agent Donald Ressler (Diego Klattenhoff) that Liz was in danger, so that he could save her, which he did by smashing his car into their convoy.
Unfortunately, Liz took it the wrong way and went on the run once more, believing that Ressler had been trying to kill her.
However, later, after meeting Red at the Del Rio restaurant, which was owned by a friend of Red’s, she learned that Red had asked Ressler to save her.
Liz then went to the bathroom to try and calm herself down, but became tense after a police car showed up. A tip had been called in that they were at that particular restaurant.
Red and Liz then took the restaurant hostage, and used the customers as human shields at the windows, while the FBI camped outside.
Red, upon noting that Ressler had arrived, gave out a series of demands. It included them restoring electricity to the building in one and a half hours, an armored truck that would safely get them to a runway of their choice, and Marvin Gerard (Fisher Stevens), Red’s lawyer.
Marvin, it turned out, was a brilliant lawyer who had been imprisoned after trying to kidnap his teenaged son who was being abused by Marvin’s rich and powerful wife.
Inside the restaurant, Marvin removed all the wires that they had put on him. He began reading several of the Fulcrum’s files until he chanced one on that he and Red could use.
However, during the entire ordeal, Liz was tense, which resulted in her attacking one of the customers to the point that she broke his ribs, as he had lunged for her gun.
After Marvin showed Red what they could use for one of his plans, Red demanded that the power be turned on, and herded all the customers into the kitchen, where they locked them in. The power was then turned on. The SWAT team leader decided to turn it on despite Ressler’s hesitation, as he just realized that Red himself had called the tip in, as Red’s goal from the get go was to break Marvin out of prison.
Ressler then had everyone storm the restaurant, but it was too late as Red, Liz and Marvin had all been escorted out a secret entrance by the restaurant owner, who also escaped.
Red then brought Marvin’s girlfriend to him, and arranged for them to have safe passage to a secure location, where Marvin could work on a working plan for Red.
As for Red and Liz, they escaped out of the area via a cargo container on a ship, as one of the containers there had been specifically outfitted for him.
There, Liz wondered how Red could stand people looking at him with fear, as she had been affected by how the wife of the man whom she had hurt had looked at her. He then comforted her and told her that he always found his way home when he looked at her.
Meanwhile, Solomon began torturing Dembe Zuma (Hisham Tawfiq) regarding Red’s whereabouts; and former FBI Assistant Director Harold Cooper (Harry lennix) got demoted to a desk job, where he began to immediately research about Karakurt.
Later that night, on his way home, Ressler was suddenly approached by Tom Keen (Ryan Eggold) who claimed that had to talk.
What do you think Tom wanted to talk to Ressler about? Where do you think Red and Liz will head to from there? How do you like the new format of the show? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
