The episode picked up from where it had left off in the previous episode. After John Rayburn (Kyle Chandler) dropped off his older brother, Danny Rayburn (Ben Mendelsohn) at the bus station and left, Danny stayed behind and helped Eric O’ Bannon (Jamie McShane) fill up several gasoline containers with gasoline. Eric then told him to meet him at the docks the next day at ten in the morning, and Danny slept over at Eric’s sister’s house.
Meanwhile, Kevin Rayburn (Norbert Leo Butz) thanked his soon to be ex-wife, Belle (Katie Finneran) for coming to the party with him, and for postponing the announcement of their divorce.
The next morning, Danny confronted his father, Robert Rayburn (Sam Shepard), who went out kayaking every morning, and told him that he didn’t want to leave without saying good bye to him.
Meanwhile, John discovered that the Jane Doe that he and Marco Diaz (Enrique Murciano) had found the previous night had drowned to death, and had suffered third degree burns, and had fiberglass fragments under her nails.
The next scene then saw the entire Rayburn family at the hospital, as Robert was being treated for head trauma, and Danny had an arm in a sling. Danny then told them that Robert had collapsed while kayaking, and that he had hurt his arm while trying to save their father. However, Kevin refused to believe that that is what had happened, and refused to believe that he had stayed in order to properly say goodbye to Robert. Danny also revealed to his mother that he had asked to come home and that Robert had told him that he hadn’t wanted him back.
Danny’s doctor then told him that he had chronic pain due to an old fracture wound, which he claimed was due to an old hit and run accident, and shouted at the doctor to refill his pain relief pills. Afterwards, he left and took his family’s boat to Eric, so that they could drop off the containers of gasoline at the designated drop off point.
While this happened, Meg (Linda Cardellini) cancelled the pier dedication ceremony and took care of things at the hotel, while Kevin, who got a fresh set of clothes from Belle, found several witnesses who might or might not have seen Danny and Robert arguing, as they only saw them thrashing around in the water before Danny asked for help. He refused to believe that Robert just had a stroke.
John, who went looking around for Danny after learning that Eric had called in sick at work that day, was confronted by Danny’s doctor, who told him that Danny should consider having surgery for his old injury. John then remembered that Danny had gotten that injury as a teenager as their father, who did have quite a temper, had beaten Danny up. Meanwhile, Sally, in Robert’s room, remembered a teenaged beaten up Danny in the hospital. Afterwards, she told John that she wanted Danny back home. Later, she told Kevin that she knew that Robert had told Danny that he couldn’t come back. Because of this, he called John, and got upset at the fact that he had changed his mind without telling them first, as they had agreed to let Danny come back home.
Later, back at the hotel, while John confronted Danny about where he had been, Kevin came and shouted at Danny. Danny then told him that he had hit Robert in the head with a paddle so that Kevin could hit him. However, John put a stop to it as he suddenly saw Kevin as a younger Robert, beating up a helpless Danny.
The scene then shifted to earlier that morning where Robert revealed that John, Kevin and Meg had been the ones that had decided, and that he had really been saved by Danny as he had collapsed while kayaking.
The scene then flashed forward to the near future to Kevin’s trashed office. He then gave an untraceable gun to John, while John narrated that they had given Danny several chances to leave, but hadn’t understood that, and that Kevin had a temper, just like Robert.
