However, Danny seemed sincere that he wanted to return for good. Meanwhile, Sheriff John Rayburn (Kyle Chandler), Danny’s younger brother, discovered a dead teenaged girl out on the mangroves. In flash forwards, John narrated how they had done something terrible, and showed exactly what they had done. Read on to learn more about this episode.
As Danny Rayburn (Ben Mendelsohn) took the bus home, the rest of his family got ready for the Rayburn inn’s forty fifth opening anniversary, which would be celebrated with family and friends. However, every time that Danny popped a pain reliever, he kept on seeing a woman with dark hair, and a seahorse necklace.
Danny then got off, and accidentally reunited with an old friend while his younger brother, Sheriff John Rayburn (Kyle Chandler), waited in vain for him to arrive. However, minutes after he returned to the ongoing party, Danny surprised his mother, Sally Rayburn (Sissy Spacek), by showing up and joining in on the fun on the beach.
Later, he asked his younger sister, a lawyer named Meg (Linda Cardellini) to provide an extra chair beside him at the family table as he was bringing along a date. As soon as their other brother, Kevin (Norbert Leo Butz) got wind of this, an argument started as Kevin didn’t want Danny’s date, Sheryl, to sit at the family table. However, in the end, John and Meg intervened, and Sheryl, who later got drunk, sat at the family table. Before dinner ended, Robert Rayburn (Sam Shepard), the family patriarch gave a speech and invited them all to join the dedication ceremony of the south side pier to the Rayburn family. He then mentioned his entire family and praised them, and almost forgot Danny, who later toasted to the Rayburns.
Later that night, Danny asked John to talk to their father as he wanted to come back home for good, and wanted to help out in the family business. Afterwards, John went with Meg’s boyfriend, Marco Diaz (Enrique Murciano), as they had gotten a call about something that had been spotted in the mangroves. As they drew closer, they realized that they had found the body of a dead teenaged girl which was submerged in the water.
The next day, Danny went lobster gathering with a friend of his, Eric O’ Bannon (Jamie McShane), and thought that he saw the seahorse necklace of the woman he knew. However, he ended up bleeding as he had picked up a hook.
Meanwhile, John informed Robert that Danny wanted to go back home, but Robert left the decision up to him, Kevin and Meg. Kevin refused to have Danny around, but Meg believed in second chances, and John told them that he wanted Danny to be around as Danny had saved him from a lot of things when they were younger, even if it seemed that John kept on saving Danny from his own self as an adult.
That night, Danny and Eric got high on drugs, which resulted in a disaster as Danny got mad at Eric for telling him the truth-that his family didn’t really care about him. He then swam into the ocean as he believed that he was chasing after the woman with the seahorse necklace, and almost drowned. The next morning, Sally told Danny, who woke up to find himself naked on the docks, to cover himself up as they had guests.
Later that day, because of his behavior, John told Danny that their father had refused to welcome Danny back home. Because of this, Danny decided to leave that night, and John, who brought him there, before leaving, told his brother that they would see each other during Christmas. As he drove away, Danny stalled and didn’t seem in a hurry to board the bus going back up north.
During the entire episode, in flash forwards, John told the audience that he had no idea why Danny had returned, and that he couldn’t have known what would happen to them. He also mentioned that in a way, he wasn’t just trying to save Danny, but himself.
The viewers were then shown clips of John carrying Danny’s unconscious body through the mangroves in the rain. John then hauled Danny onto a boat, doused it in gasoline and torched it.
He then went on to say that now, he doesn’t know anymore if he was proud of being a Rayburn, and decided to tell the viewers the truth about what they did to their brother, and not to judge them as they had done a terrible thing, but weren’t terrible people.
