The episode began with a man trying to commit suicide by jumping off from one of the levels of a parking lot. He stopped after seeing a dead body on the grill right below him.
The next morning, Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan (Emily Deschanel) became suspicious. It was after her ex-convict father, Max Keenan (Ryan O’Neal) cancelled his plans with Christine (Sunnie Pelant) in order to go on a mysterious out of town trip. As he would not answer any of her questions, Bones decided to ask her husband, FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) to put a tracking device on him.
At the parking lot, they concluded that the victim was male and had been in his thirties. However, most of the front of his skull was smashed beyond recognition.
Back at the Jeffersonian, Dr. Jack Hodgins (TJ Thyne) informed them that he had to remove all of the bird guano to be able to examine the bones better. Afterwards, they discovered that their victim had died of a gunshot wound to the head. Aside from that, they discovered that he had heart issues, had carpal tunnel in his right hand and used beta blockers. That, combined with a notebook that they had found in his pocket with notes that looked like it was written in code. It led Booth to conclude that the victim was a marksman.
Back at the laboratory, while Hodgins cleaned the bones, intern Wendell Bray (Michael Grant Terry) asked for some help to fix his girlfriend Andie Roberts’ (Shalita Grant) grandmother’s clock as he had accidentally broken it. Afterwards, thanks to the fractures which required surgery, which they found on the victim, they were able to identify him as Troy Carter, who, according to his brother, Jake Carter (Chris Marrs), who was also his partner in their landscaping business, was a professional Mini Golf player. He also informed them that Troy was supposed to play at the Mini Golf Masters that was currently ongoing at Sammy’s Tiki Hut. It was was owned by Sammy Tucker (Carlos Alazraqui) and hand model Lori Tucker (Arden Myrin).
There, Booth and Bones discovered that Sammy and Lori had heavily invested in Troy’s career as a mini golfer. Bones then had one of Sammy’s tiki huts brought over to the laboratory after discovering that Troy had been shot there.
Dr. Camille Saroyan (Tamara Taylor) then discovered that Troy had been a fight around ten days ago and that he had antibodies consistent with yellow fever and hepatitis b. However, they were interrupted as Booth told Bones that they were bringing in Max from Ohio where he had been caught robbing the grave of one of the FBI’s most wanted fugitives- Marvin Barlowe. However, Max refused to give Bones answer with regards to his actions. It made Bones believe that he shouldn’t be anywhere near Christine.
Meanwhile, they brought in Eric Simms (Eric Allan Kramer). It was after discovering that Troy had been in an intimate relationship with eighteen-year-old Darla Simms (Alex Frank). However, it turned out that his brother, Jake, was the one who had fought with Troy as he was trying to protect him.
Meanwhile, while Wendell cleaned the bones again, Hodgins told Wendell that in order for the clock to work, they were going to swap the insides of a brand new one which he got for nine dollars online to the inside of the old clock. Afterwards, the entire team became puzzled as it seemed as if he had been shot four times at different angles, which was consistent with a multiple impact bullet- a bullet that separates into three bullets tied together with Kevlar.
They brought in Sammy after realizing that he had a gun like that, as he might have been upset that Troy was going off on his own to the World Championship in Johannesburg, but it turned out that he was paying for the entire trip.
After finding a nail and nail polish embedded in one of the bones, they realized that the murderer was Lori. He had been trying to save her marriage as it seemed like she was losing Sammy to Troy and mini golf.
Afterwards, Wendell told Andie what had happened. Dhe reconciled with him after telling him that the clock had always been broken.
Later that night, Max informed Bones that he had gone back to Ohio to retrieve a ring that she thought she had lost as a little girl. It turned out that Barlowe had entered her room. He had gotten it from her in order to show Max that he could get at his family, which was why he had left them. They then reconciled, and Max stayed for dinner.
