“Bones” Season 10 Episode 20 “The Woman in the Whirlpool” aired on Thursday, May 28, 2015 at 8:00 p.m. on FOX. In this episode, the team investigated the murder of an obsessive cookie jar collector, while FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) struggled to work on his gambling addiction. Meanwhile, FBI Special Agent James Aubrey (John Aubrey) discovered someone who might just be more than a colleague at the Jeffersonian. Read on to learn more about this episode.
The episode began with a Born Again baptism ceremony gone wrong as the one being baptized came out from the river with a dead body on his back.
Meanwhile, Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan (Emily Deschanel) mentioned to Angela Montenegro (Michaela Conlin), while watching over their kids who were playing together at the playground, that the baby kicked every time she talked about her husband, FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz), who was currently at a Gambler’s Anonymous meeting. However, after the meeting, his sponsor, Gavin Chadwick (Alex Skuby), reminded him that he had to share and participate during the meetings so that he could get better. Booth also told him that he was getting settled into his new apartment.
Meanwhile, at the crime scene, Booth arrived late, and discovered from “squintern” Jessica Warren (Laura Spencer) that the victim was a woman in her late fifties. Dr. Jack Hodgins (TJ Thyne) then, after the Nautilus Jr. got stuck in some weeds, dove in to retrieve the victim’s missing arm. They also theorized that the woman might have gotten caught in a man- made whirlpool.
Back at the Jeffersonian, thanks to a piece of shirt retrieved by Hodgins, Angela was able to discover the logo on the shirt which told her that the victim was Leslie Hodsoll, and that she worked at Thompson Hardware, which was owned by Ted Thompson (Michael Cram), who mentioned that Leslie had a twenty year old daughter named Courtney Hodsoll (Taylor Spreitler), who was living with her. She was surprised to hear that her mother had died, and showed them her mother’s cookie jar collection, which she had been obsessed with, and which accounted for the fact that they had found trace amounts of arsenic and uranium poisoning along with other poisons, which had found its way from the cookie jar to within Leslie’s system.
However, before they left, Dr. Camille “Cam” Saroyan (Tamara Taylor) noticed sparks flying between Aubrey and Jessica. They then also found a recent laceration in the tissue of Leslie’s right hand, which Hodgins looked at.
Later, during lunch, Bones ran into Booth at the Royal Diner, and left after Booth tried to hint that he wanted to go back home, as Bones felt that it was “too soon”, especially as he had put her, the baby and Christine (Sunnie Pelant) in danger. Back at the Jeffersonian, Hodgins theorized to Angela that their job might also be a factor as to why Booth and Brennan were experiencing this.
Booth and Bones then paid a visit to Cheryl McMichael (Juliette Jeffers) after discovering that Leslie had posted bad reviews about her online, which was because she had sold an antique Babe Ruth jar to someone else.
Meanwhile, Back at the Jeffersonian, they discovered that Leslie was addicted to collecting because of a gunshot wound that had been inflicted to her head twenty years ago. After discovering attic dust in Leslie’s lungs, Aubrey and Jessica went to Leslie’s attic where they found Scott Simon (Mahrya Shain) holding a Babe Ruth cookie jar, which Leslie had stolen from him. They also questioned Courtney again after discovering that she had tried to sell the collection online so that she could be more important to her mother, but took it down the next day.
After Bones gave Jessica and X-ray which had technetium for her collection of elements on the periodic table of elements, they discovered that a champagne bottle, like the one Hodgins found in the river, was the murder weapon.
They then brought in Thompson, whose fingerprint was on it. He then revealed that Leslie had used his locksmith services to break into Scott’s house, and that he was trying to win her back because he thought that she was in love with her. He tried then to smash the jars, but she got sliced in the throat after trying to protect it.
Later, Bones told Booth that he was welcome to swing by the house anytime, and he finally opened up during a meeting.
Meanwhile, Aubrey and Jessica had a celebratory dinner together, which looked like the beginning of a new kind of relationship between them.
