Drew Brees, the quarterback for the New Orleans Saints and team officials have agreed to a new five-year contract for $100 million. The contract will make Brees the highest paid player in the National Football League. Mario Williams the defensive end for the Buffalo Bills has a $100 contract but his contract is for six years and not five and this offseason Peyton Manning signed with the Denver Broncos for five years but his contract was for $96 million.
Team officials have not announced the deal publically, but it is believed to include a salary in the first year of $40 million and guaranteed money of $60 million.
On Friday, Brees posted on his Twitter page that he had finally reached a deal and that he loves the Who Dat Nation.
Brees was sitting out offseason practice sessions with the team in an attempt to sign a new deal. Brees now feels he is being paid what he deserves, as he had to sign a contract for less money when he came to play for New Orleans following surgery on his throwing shoulder.
With the contract out of the way, Brees is now assured to report on time at the start of training camp for the Saints on July 24. Team officials will be pleased to have this stressful situation out of the way. It was just another situation that has been part of the most tumultuous offseason in team history.
The bounty scandal uncovered by the NFL this offseason caused a number of suspensions including Sean Payton the Saints head coach who has been lost for the entire season.
