Bridesmaids and The Hunger Games Lead MTV Nominations

Bridesmaids and The Hunger Games both received eight nominations for the upcoming MTV Movie Awards. The two movies edged out The Twilight Saga for the most nominations.

The Hunger Games is a post-apocalyptic action movie that overwhelmed the box office with more than $600 million in worldwide ticket sales. It received nominations for best movie and best cast. Cast members Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson were nominated for breakthrough performance, best actress and best actor.

The Bridesmaids, is a comedy with females stars that also picked up nominations for best movies and best cast. The writer of the film and its star Kristen Wiig was nominated for best actress and best comedy performance.

Wiig and Lawrence will face Emma Watson, Rooney Mara and Emma Stone in the best actress category. Hutcherson will compete against Daniel Radcliffe, Channing Tatum, Ryan Gosling and Joseph Gordan-Levitt in the best actor category.

Joining Bridesmaids and The Hunger Games in the race for best movie are The Help, a civil rights film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II and Breaking Dawn from the Twilight Saga.

The awards show will be held this year in Los Angeles June 3. It is annually one of the most watched shows on MTV, a cable channel that is youth-oriented. The channel also acts as a launching pad for movies that are geared towards the younger audiences. The winners are determined by online voting in 12 categories. In the breakthrough performance category, a separate group of directors chooses the winner.
