“Broadchurch” Season 2 Episode 5 aired on Monday, Feb. 2, 2015, at 9:00 p.m. on ITV in the UK. Detectives Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller discover more about the Sandbrook case while the Miller-Latimer trial has hit a snag for the defense. Find out what happened in the recap below.
Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) visits her son who has been living with her sister. He has questions her about the trial and the boy is indifferent to her for the outcome of Danny’s death. She suggests they all return home, but Tom refuses and leaves his mother standing there, crying for her family.
Ellie gets to work. She is helping Alec Hardy (David Tennant) interview a witness for his Sandbrook case. They hope she can shed some light on Ricky Gillespie’s (Shaun Dooley) behavior, as he’s become a potential suspect. The witness attests that Ricky is probably a substance abuser.
Meanwhile in court, Jocelyn (Charlotte Rampling) from the prosecution breaks Susan Wright (Pauline Quirke), establishing her testimony as purely hearsay, assumptions and without any credence. This rattles the defense as their prime witness is, in fact, a liability. The prosecution is pushing the defense to bring Joe Miller (Matthew Gravelle) on the stand and it’s the last thing Sharon (Marianne Jean-Baptiste) wants to happen. They have to find a better witness, so they go to Rev. Paul Coates (Arthur Darvill) demanding that he take the witness stand.
Paul talks to his girlfriend Becca about his dilemma. He said that he only meets with Joe Miller in prison because he thought he would be able to save him. He thought Joe would repent and atone for his sins.
After the trial, Ellie and a Hardy drive to Claire’s (Eve Myles) house. She recounts, for the nth time, what happened the night the Sandbrook girls disappeared. She denies knowing the owner of the number on her phone, which Ellie discovered. Hardy is upset at her for it sounds like she’s lying when she’s supposed to be his key witness. She also admits that while Ellie and Hardy were in Sandbrook (in the last episode Season 2 Episode 4 (air date: Jan. 26, 2015), she and Lee (James D’Arcy) hooked up and had sex. She says Lee is like a drug to her.
They return to Hardy’s house and finds Ricky waiting. He wants to apologize for his behavior towards Hardy when they last met. He also came down to Broadchurch. He wanted to confirm if Lee has indeed returned from France. Hardy says that he needs to talk to Miller if he wants to provide clarity to the case of the young girls.
There is a flashback scene showing the girls playing hide and seek with Lee and Ricky.
In discussing with Miller, Ricky reveals that her daughter Pippa was a delightful, athletic and competitive young girl. She was close to him and Ricky was clearly fond of his daughter. He also talks about Lisa, his niece, who had a tricky relationship with her father. Ellie asks if Ricky fancied her niece, and he is offended by the question.
When Ricky leaves, Ellie wonders how far Hardy looked into his character at that time, but he had a solid alibi. Only now, as the stories seem to change. It’s obvious someone is lying. Their likely suspects have expanded to Lee, Ricky, Claire and a stalker. Ellie is obsessed with the Sandbrook case and asks Hardy if she could go over all the files carefully.
As she’s doing this, Hardy’s health problems start affecting him again and he decides to take a walk to relieve himself. He goes to Jocelyn’s house to have his will prepared and they talk about the trial. Is Jocelyn going to win this one? She’s confident that she will.
Ellie discovers something from the files and comes up with a theory. Lisa killed her cousin Pippa by accident. She gets rid of the body and is now on the lam. For why else have they not found her body, too? It’s a good possibility.
It’s the trial once again, and the defense brings up Nigel (Joe Sims) to the stand. But Sharon becomes distracted when she receives a notice that her son in prison was beaten up. Back in court, she and Jocelyn had a run-in. Sharon lashes out at her, blaming her for not helping her family when they needed Jocelyn’s expertise and help with her son’s case. Jocelyn lashes back. She told herthat Sharon has to own up to her decisions and not blame someone else, as she always does.
Hardy gets a call from Lee asking him if he gave his address to Ricky, coz apparently, he has learned where he lives. Hardy catches up to Lee and Ricky, with the latter badly beating up the other. Ricky said that it’s all he wants to do. It turns out, Lee had an affair with Ricky’s wife. This Sandbrook case is more twisted and sensational than what happened in Broadchurch!
Meanwhile, Beth Latimer (Jodi Whitaker) asks her husband Mark (Andre Buchan) for his support. She’s going to set up a foundation in the name of Danny. As suggested to her by the pastor, it will have to involve reforming sex offenders. Mark would like nothing of it, and instead, he only wants to focus on the new baby. Beth arrives at the church to meet with the men. When sees their faces, she suddenly balks and walks out. She cannot do it.
The defense gets a visit from Tom, Ellie and Joe’s son. He wonders why they haven’t called him to the stand to testify for his dad. This, however, upsets Ellie so much, because her son still thinks his dad did not kill his best friend.
The episode ends with Hardy and Ellie checking out a site in Sandbrook, which she discovered from Lisa’s cell phone records. It’s an abandoned place which shows signs of blood and sulfur. Someone tried to get rid of a body here. Could it be Lisa’s?
