Bruce Jenner’s second wife Linda Thompson talked about her life when she was still together with the athlete. Thompson also said that she can now breathe a little easier after her ex-husband found the strength to publicly declare his real gender.

The Olympic gold medalist appeared in a two-hour interview with Diane Sawyer on ABC admitted that he has the “soul of a female”. Bruce Jenner also said that although he was born with male body parts, he is for all intents and purposes a woman.

Thompson was among the many family members of Jenner who cheered after coming out of his closet, reported CNN. Linda Thompson had two sons with the athlete and “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” star during their 5-year marriage.

In a column written on Huffington Post, Thompson said that she has respected the secrets of Bruce Jenner and understood the matter to be private. The actress also said that she could have taken the secret to her private if Bruce had not come public. She said, “He can finally realize his need to be who he authentically is, who he was born to be. That takes tremendous courage. For that I commend him.”

Linda Thompson also said that she would not have agreed to marry Bruce Jenner had she known about his gender confusion issues. However, she said that she was glad she did not know about the matter as she could have not shared a memorable life with Jenner.

Bruce Jenner and Linda Thompson met in 1979 at the Playboy Mansion during a celebrity tennis match. At that time, Jenner was on the process of divorce from his first wife. The two were then seen as a glamour couple who finally married on January 5, 1981 and settled in Hawaii. The two also had two boys, Brandon born in 1981 and Brody who was born 2 years after.

Thompson admitted that Bruce Jenner told her in 1985 that he wanted to move along the process of becoming a woman. She also suggested that Jenner should undergo therapy at the time to determine if they can still fix or overcome the issue. The actress also said, “I was pretty ignorant of the fact that being transgender isn’t something that can be overcome, fixed, prayed away, exorcised or obliterated by any other arcane notion.”

Linda said that she has already forgiven Bruce Jenner and hoped that he would have things a lot easier after coming public. Linda added that Jenner has “been held prisoner in his own flesh.”
