The unforgettable Princess Leia did not leave the Star Wars franchise groping in the dark. Everything is in place for Carrie Fisher to make an appearance in Star Wars Episode 9 despite her untimely demise late last year. This is according to Todd Fisher who has confirmed that his sister will play the role of Princess Leia Organa one last time.
Many expressed their concern regarding the status of Fisher’s character in the final installment of Disney’s Star Wars trilogy after she passed away December of last year. Before her death, she was able to finish filming her scenes for Episode 8 and now in Episode 9, she will have an appearance again. You might ask how. You might ask how. Unlike Harrison Ford’s character Han Solo, Princess Leia was still alive at the end of The Force Awakens and is expected to live through the next two films.
While some fans speculated that the use of CGI was opposed to these deeming it inappropriate, according to The Verge, the studio already received some flak after recreating the late Peter Cushing’s character Grand Moff Tarkin in Rogue One.
The film also recreated a younger version of Fisher as Princess Leia given her role in the film’s story. This led many to believe that the same can be done after Fisher passed away.
Princess Leia Will Not Be Digitally Recreated In Star Wars Episode 9
However, Disney and Lucasfilm adamantly denied that the same would be done for Fisher in Star Wars Episode 8: The Last Jedi. Shortly after her death, Lucasfilm assured fans that they are not planning to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher’s performance as Princess Leia or as General Organa.
Their statement said that “cherish her memory and legacy as Princess Leia,” and “honor everything she gave to Star Wars.” To do it entirely without CGI, Disney and Lucasfilm will likely use excess footage from the filming of The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.
Thankfully, her relatives understood what she meant to the franchise and allowed the film to use recent footage of the late actress. This means that the studio can utilize them to fill in Fisher’s scenes in Star Wars Episode 9 without the use of CGI.
Fisher’s brother Todd revealed that he and Carrie’s daughter, Billie Lourd, gave Disney and Lucasfilm permission to use the footage. This means that Fisher will appear in the final installment of the Star Wars sequel in the flesh.
Speaking to New York Daily News, Todd said “Both of us were like, ‘Yes, how do you take her out of it?’ And the answer is you don’t.
Likening her life to the events in the film, Todd added “She’s as much a part of it as anything, and I think her presence now is even more powerful than it was, like Obi-Wan – when the saber cuts him down, he becomes more powerful. I feel like that’s what’s happened with Carrie. I think the legacy should continue.”
Carrie Fisher’s Family Nodded To Use Previous Scenes Footages
He admitted that he is unsure of her role in the film which has not yet begun filming. However, he believes that his sister belongs to the fans and they deserve to have her even after her passing.
Fisher’s passing seemed to mark the end of an era for the Star Wars franchise. Being one of the original trilogy’s heroes, early fans of the franchise were awestruck by this “Princess” who can kick butt alongside Luke and Han.
She was there at the beginning and lived long enough to pass the torch to a newer and younger group of misfits. It is definitely a new age for the franchise, however, we will not forget the ones who started it all.
Leia Organa, Han Solo, and Luke Skywalker will always be central to the Star Wars universe. Future films will likely reference these three in their respective plots and will probably recreate them through CGI at some point. However, as it stands, it would be appropriate for Disney and Lucasfilm to allow Carrie Fisher to finish the trilogy as herself.
Carrie Fisher Did Not Leave The Star Wars Franchise
With the recent developments in the filming, it is clear that the deceased star did not leave the franchise. Her participation in the film will continue for years. After all, Fisher’s character is deeply rooted in the saga.
Filming for Star Wars Episode 9 is set to begin in July of this year. Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow will be at the helm of this installment and is set to be released on May 23, 2019.
