American Horror Story for the last six seasons has scared and freaked out fans. A huge credit for the show’s success goes to its cast.
Some stars who have been a significant part of the show are now getting an opportunity to reunite for another project. This project is actually not what fans would expect. But it would still be worth watching.
American Horror Story cast reuniting
Finn Wittrock and Lily Rabe are the stars that are reuniting for this movie. It will be based on the play titled A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Along with Wittrock and Rabe, Hamish Linklater, Rachel Leigh Cook, and others will be joining the project.
According to the outlet, some significant changes are being made to the movie. In an exclusive look, it was revealed that it is a contemporary take on the play. Also going by the first look, it seems to have a bohemian vibe to it.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare
A Midsummer Night’s Dream is considered one of the most famous plays ever written by William Shakespeare. Written around the 1590’s, it is considered to be a comedy play. Theseus, the Duke of Athens and Hippolyta, Queen of Amazon were the main characters of it.
It revolved around their wedding and later on started involving other characters as well. As a part of the main storyline, characters like Egeus, Hermia, Lysander, Demetrius, and Helena were roped in to form a cobweb. It is also said that the play consisted of four interconnecting plots.
Egeus was Hermia’s father who wanted her to marry Demetrius. But since she and Lysander loved each other, she did not want to marry anyone else. Amidst the marriage of Theseus and Hippolyta, Egeus got offended by his daughter’s choice and invoked an ancient law in front of Theseus.
According to this law, a daughter would only have to marry the person her father would choose. If she would not comply, she would be given a death sentence. But since Hermia was adamant on marrying only Lysander, Theseus offered her an alternative of becoming a nun and worship the Goddess Artemis.
Another character who was getting hurt amid all of this was Helena. She was in love with Demetrius who was chosen to marry Hermia. When Hermia and Lysander eloped to the forests, Helena was the one who informed Demetrius about the couple. Since she informed Demetrius about the couple, she hoped to win his love.
Previous adaptations of the play
The play is incredibly famous. There have been multiple film and TV adaptations of it. The outlet, however, recalled two notable movie adaptations. One adaptation featured Olivia de Havilland. This adaptation was released in 1935.
The other was an ensemble in 1999 starring Christian Bale, Kevin Kline, Michelle Pfeiffer and Rupert Everett. With the most recent adaptation starring American Horror Story stars, makers are looking to give it a creative touch that will appeal to today’s audiences.
This adaptation will also have to make sure that it is not similar to the previous ones and properly justifies each character from the play.
Expectations from the latest adaptation
Since the play has been adapted almost everywhere in the world, the makers and the cast members will have to make an effort to make it completely different and unique. The outlet already noted that two of the cast members are well acquainted with the work of Shakespeare.
Rabe and Linklater have been a part of the theater scene for a while owing to the many Shakespeare productions that are made. Given their experience with Shakespeare’s work, it can be expected that they will bring their expertise in the movie and get the nuances of their characters right.
The outlet revealed a poster of the latest adaptation and that hints at what will be seen in the movie. It should also be noted that only a few characters like Hermia, Lysander, Theseus, Hippolyta, Helena, and Demetrius are featured on the poster.
This could perhaps mean that only these characters from the play will be seen in the movie and the rest of the characters have been purposely left out. The story of this adaptation is moving from Greece to modern day Los Angeles. Despite all the changes that have been made, the adaptation will retain the element of laughter from the play.
The movie will premiere at the Los Angeles Film Festival on the 17th of June.
