Castle” Season 7 Episode 11 “Castle, P.I.” aired last Monday, Jan. 12, 2015 at 10:00 p.m. on ABC. In this episode, Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion), now a private investigator, raced against his wife, Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic), Detective Kevin Ryan (Seamus Dever) and Detective Javier Esposito (Jon Huertas), to solve the murder of preschool teacher Shana Baker. Read on to learn more about this episode.

At the beginning of the episode, a woman entered her apartment only to be shot dead be an unknown gunman.

Meanwhile, the next morning, everyone was surprised to see that Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) was dressed. He had been taking several days off of work ever since he was not allowed to consult with his wife, Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic), and the New York Police Department. Cryptically, he just told Kate that he had “a surprise” for her later. However, their conversation was interrupted by a phone call. It summoned Kate to work, as they had found a dead body.

At the crime scene, Detective Kevin Ryan (Seamus Dever) and Medical Examiner Pearlmutter (Arye Gross) informed her that the victim was Shana Baker, who worked at a preschool at Eastbourne Preschool. She was shot in the chest, and whoever the killer was, he or she had already been there when she had arrived. She had been shot at around 9:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Kevin then showed her that they had found a cigarette butt in the fire escape, which meant that the murder was premeditated. After seeing the dog dish and water bowl, Kate wondered out loud where the dog was. They were then interrupted by Castle, who, as it turned out, and much to the surprise of Kate, was now a licensed Private Investigator, which was the “surprise” he had been talking about. They then tried to bar him out as he wasn’t supposed to be investigating with them. After he left, Kate told Ryan to talk to the superintendent of the building, while she and Detective Javier Esposito (Jon Huertas) went over to Eastbourne.

When they got there, they were surprised to find that Castle had beaten them to Eastbourne. He told them that since he had gotten there first, it was now his “interview.” He also told them the he knew that that school was “the feeder school” in the city, and where the children of the “city’s elite” all went to.

They then learned that she was an admissions director at the school, and was in charge of accepting and rejecting possible students. However, they were told that she had been taking several weeks off after submitting a batch of acceptance letters. After looking over her office, they discovered a threatening voice mail in which a father threatened to kill her for rejecting his son’s application. They then left Castle behind after obtaining the list of parents from the school. However, Castle, based on the picture of Shana and her dog on the desk, noticed that the dog, Sparkles, had a tracking device on his collar.

He then tracked the dog down and followed a man holding Sparkles. However, after being confronted by him, and getting pepper sprayed in the face, Castle learned that Jeremy, the friend of Shana, often took care of Sparkles when she went on some trips. However, this time had been different as she had asked him to take care of Sparkles, and gave the dog to him without prior notice.

Back at the precinct, Captain Victoria Gates (Penny Johnson) was surprised and enraged to find out that Castle was now a private investigator, and warned them all not to share information or give him access to anything. Afterwards, Kevin and Esposito wondered out loud that it would be interesting and funny if Castle solved the case before they did.

They then found out that the threatening voice mail had been placed by Brian Whitman, a senior partner at a big firm. However, he told them that he didn’t have a reason to kill her as she suddenly changed her mind about letting his son get accepted. His alibi and what he just said checked out.

After pulling Shana’s financial records, they discovered that she had withdrawn $ 3,000 in cash the day before she had died.

Meanwhile, Castle annoyed Pearlmutter at the morgue after checking the chart for her stomach contents which indicated that she had flown to Boston. Pearlmutter then shared this information with Kate, who verified that she arrived hours before she was killed. They also discovered that she had called the News Desk at “The Ledger” when she had arrived back from Boston. Kevin, who ran her credit cards, discovered that she had had lunch with Nicole Morris (Heather McComb), a lawyer at a big firm before she had left. After checking her office, Kevin told Kate that she might be able to catch her at a particular address that afternoon.

When she got there, she was surprised to see Nicole there with Castle. It turned out that he had tracked her down without Kate’s help. Kate, at first was annoyed at Castle’s secrecy, but decided to sit in. They learned that Shana had asked Nicole all sorts of questions about murder, and Nicole informed them that Shana went to Boston to go to Radnor University.

After agonizing over whether to “theorize” with Castle or not, Kevin and Esposito called her up as they had learned that Brian was also on the board of Radnor University. They then brought him in, and they discovered that Shana had allowed his son to get in, if he made a call to the Dean of Students as she had needed some help. They then found out that she looked at “incident reports from 1999”.

Castle, ended up looking through Shana’s social media accounts and discovered that there was one particular incident that happened fifteen years ago. Afterwards, Kate called him up to try to learn if he knew anything. Back home, they tried to fill each other’s wine glasses up in order to leverage information from each other. Because of this, Kate learned that Castle knew that Shana’s boyfriend had died years ago and thought that he had been murdered. While they were asleep, Kate told Ryan to pull up the incident report.

Back at the precinct, they learned that the files had been tampered with. Meanwhile, Castle accessed Radnor’s public records. Both Kate and Castle went after Frank Jackson, the editor in chief of the paper at that time as the story on the paper had been changed at the last minute. The reason why his name was familiar was because he worked for The Ledger, He  had been the President of the organization that organized the party that Jeff Whalen, Shana’s boyfriend, had died in. However, Castle got to him first and brought him to the precinct, where he admitted to covering it up as someone “big” had pressured him to do so. He then told them that he knew that he was asked to cover it up for the reputation of whoever was with Jeff that night.

They then pinpointed that it might be Spalding Elliot (Tim Griffin), the city’s leading criminal prosecutor. Shana had confronted him after calling Frank up. However, they discovered that he was not the killer, even if the DNA on the cigarette butte matched, because he was allergic to long haired dogs like Sparkles. He then deduced that he was being set up by someone. He also revealed to them that Shana had told him that she had received a phone call telling her that she had to “find out the truth” about Jeff’s death, but Elliot knew that it was an accident.

They then discovered that Nicole Morris was paid by someone big to set Elliot up. They discovered that Nicole had retrieved the cigarette butte from a restaurant where he had eaten at.

Later that night, Castle received Kate’s blessing to continue being a private investigator, and got a Sherlock deerskin cap and magnifying glass as a present.
