‘Castle’ Recap: ‘Cool Boys’

“Castle” Season 8 Episode 8 “Cool Boys” aired last November 9, 2015 at 10:00 PM on ABC. In this episode, Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) reluctantly teamed up with Detective Ethan Slaughter (Adam Baldwin) to help him investigate a high end heist while Captain Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) was out of town. Read on to learn more about this episode.

The episode began with Detective Kevin Ryan (Seamus Dever) and Detective Javier Esposito (Jon Huertas) barging into a warehouse with an entire SWAT unit, only to discover that they had been called as back up for Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Detective Ethan Slaughter (Adam Baldwin).

In the morning before the events in the first scene, Castle, after receiving some advice from his mother, Martha Rodgers (Susan Sullivan) about what to do with his problems with Captain Kate Beckett (Stana Kttic), was surprised to discover that Detective Ethan Slaughter (Adam Baldwin) had paid him a visit as he needed some help with a high end robbery case that he was working. At first, Castle was reluctant to team up with him, given the fact that Slaughter had almost killed Castle several times when they last worked together, but was lured in with the promise of some interesting stories that might help him with a new book.

They then went over to Slaughter’s confidential informant’s apartment, only to discover that the informant, Victor Lee, had been knifed, and that Ryan and Esposito were already on the case.

Caslte and Slaughter then brought in Lee’s girlfriend, who told them that Lee had said that he was going to come into some money and was going to meet a fence named Brian Trucco (Al Carabello), who would help them sell the next generation microchip that Lee had just stolen from the Booth tower. However, they were interrupted by a call from Ryan and Esposito who told Castle to stay away from Slaughter as they suspected him of Lee’s murder due to his print being found on the knife.

However, Castle decided to give him the benefit of the doubt after discovering that the knife had been a thank you present to Lee from Slaughter, and convinced Slaughter to play by his rules while interrogating Trucco, who told them that Lee had had a partner, genius juvenile delinquent Louis Prince (Brett Delbuono), whom Hayley Shipton (Toks Olagundoye) had tracked down for them.

The pair then visited Louis’ counsellor, Mr. West (Corey Reynolds), a former Wall Street accountant, who told them that Lee had been the only mentor that Louis had gotten along with. They then managed to slip out before Ryan and Esposito came in, who then told Castle over phone that Slaughter had been demoted from the Gang Task Force as he had been accused of stealing from a drug dealer, which Slaughter denied.

The pair then headed for Louis’ location, which Hayley had tracked down for them, only to discover that one of the men from the crew of notorious high end heist leader David Lacey (Brian Gaskill) had been sent to kidnap Louis, who managed to escape from Castle, as it turned out that Victor had advertised his services to all of the high end heist crews due to the fact that Louis had created a device that could open any door.

Slaughter then didn’t have the chance to rough the man up some more as Ryan and Esposito came in and took both the man and Slaughter into custody. However, Castle managed to switch his keys with Esposito’s and drove off with their car, much to the amusement of both Hayley and Alexis Castle (Molly C. Quinn). Hayley also told the two that Louis didn’t kill Lee as Louis had been at a coffee shop when Lee was killed.

Meanwhile, after hiding out for a while in Slaughter’s ex-wife’s house, Castle learned that Slaughter’s ex-wife was a popular opera singer whom Slaughter had met in college as they were both in the same Musical Theater course, and that Slaughter often cooked in order to help him think.

They were then interrupted by Louis, who had hacked into Slaughter’s ex-wife’s tablet, and thanks to a fumigation notice on the wall behind Louis, they managed to track him down to a warehouse, where he was being held captive.

The pair, after walking into a trap, then managed to fight off Lacey’s gang after singing “Cool Boys” from “West Side Story” prior to fighting everyone off, right before Ryan, Esposito and the SWAT team entered.

At the precinct, they discovered that Louis had the microchip, but began to question him after discovering from Mr. Ronald Booth that someone had stolen some money from his secret bank account.

After realizing that Louis was innocent, they all combined forces and discovered that Mr. West, who had been Booth’s accountant and had gotten fired by Booth, had planted the heist idea in Lee’s head in order to gain access to the secret account. West, had also killed Lee after Lee discovered that West had been using him.

Afterwards, Slaughter assured Louis that he would be his new mentor, and would try to get Castle to get the mayor to reduce his sentence, and told Castle to actively pursue Beckett again as she still loved Castle.
