Meanwhile, Kate felt insecure and compared herself to this new “supercop.” Read on to learn more about this episode.
A jogger, early in the morning, stumbled across an Asian woman who pulled her gun on him after he discovered her going through the pockets of a dead man.
Later that morning, Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) discovered that a classmate of hers in the police academy had just made captain. She started to feel like she was “falling behind,” as she was still a detective.
They were then called to the crime scene, where they discovered that their victim, Henry Graham. He is an ex-convict, who worked for a company that repossessed cars. Thanks to the statement of the jogger, Detective Kevin Ryan (Seamus Dever) and Detective Javier “Javi” Esposito (Jon Huertas) were able to get a sketch of the woman that the jogger had seen.
At the precinct, Henry’s boss told Kate and Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) that he had been shaken. It was after coming back from lunch the previous day, and had asked for the access codes of a particular car.
Meanwhile, Ryan and Esposito discovered the woman described by jogger in Henry’s apartment, who took both of their guns from them. Back at the precinct, Kate discovered that the woman was Hong Kong Chief Inspector Zhang (Linda Park). She is a successful police officer who was currently running an American-Chines Joint Task Force against organized crime in San Francisco. After she was cleared, she decided to assist them in the investigation as Henry had a childhood friend.
They then headed to the Jade Temple in Chinatown, where Henry had lunch, just as he always did, the other day. The waitress, Su Yin, then told them that he had been arguing with Michael Glassman. He is an FBI Agent, who refused to cooperate with the New York Police Department. After Ryan informed them that they had found formaldehyde on Henry’s shoes. They didn’t know where Henry had gone for ten hours the day he had been murdered. Kate surprised Castle by telling him that she was going to hang out that night with Zhang. Later, Castle informed Ryan and Esposito that he was afraid that Kate was going to turn the “girls night out” into a competition. This was precisely what happened. Kate came home feeling insecure, as she had discovered that Zhang seemed to be perfect as if she were a better version of Kate. To top it off, as soon as they walked into the precinct the next morning, Zhang informed them that she had a new lead.
According to the surveillance footage at Henry’s apartment, he had been abducted by the very same person who had started him in a life of crime, drug dealer William Hicks (Hector Luis Bustamante). He owned a gym in Queens, and whom the FBI was building a case on. However, just as Kate discovered that they couldn’t pursue Hicks as a lead, Zhang disappeared.
Kate then went after Zhang, and stopped her before she could hurt Hicks. After confronting her about her reckless behavior, Kate learned that Zhang wasn’t as perfect as she thought that she was. She blamed herself for Henry’s death, as she hadn’t helped him right away when he had asked for it.
They then discovered that they had just given Henry a lift so that he could pick up the half a kilogram of cocaine that he had bought from him.
Afterwards, they discovered that Henry had planted the drugs in the car of an unscrupulous real estate developer named Jeffrey Ladlow (Robb Derringer), who was trying to buy property in Chinatown. They then discovered that his rival company for those particular properties and developments was Mimi Tan (Rosalind Chao), the owner of the Jade Temple restaurant.
Back at the restaurant, they discovered that Mimi, who had met Henry that night in a garment factory of hers that had formaldehyde, had Henry plant the drugs in Ladlow’s car in order to buy the waitress Su Yin’s freedom from Mimi. They then discovered that Su Yin was supposed to meet up with Henry in the park, where he had been murdered, and discovered that Mei Wu, another waitress and Su Yin’s childhood friend, had murdered Henry as she could not bear to lose Su Yin.
Afterwards, Kate wished Zhang all the luck in the world, and wrote a list of priorities for her own life, that wouldn’t allow her to compromise any of her values and that wouldn’t distract her from paying attention to the important things in life.
