“Castle’s” latest episode, “XX”, which aired last Monday, September 25, 2015 at 10:00 PM on ABC, proved to be its most controversial episode in the long running crime procedural. While most fans are still reeling from the ending that will define the rest of the season, show runners Terence Paul Winter and Alexi Hawley finally came out of the woodwork in order to discuss what these major changes and shifts mean for the series, and mainly for the season ahead. WARNING: This article contains spoilers for the previous episode, “XX” and will contain spoilers for the next few episodes of the season.
“XX” offered an interesting take on what was happening, as the entire episode was mostly from Captain Kate Beckett’s (Stana Katic) point of view, while the investigation of Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion), Hayley Shipton (Toks Olagundoye), Detective Kevin Ryan (Seamus Dever), Detective Javier “Javi” Esposito (Jon Huertas) and Alexis Castle (Molly C. Quinn), happened simultaneously, allowing the audience to look at Beckett’s point of view, discovering things at the same time what the other characters are.
In the end, it was discovered that the manhunt for Beckett and Vikram Singh (Sunkrish Bala), as well as the deaths of Beckett’s former colleagues at the Attorney General’s office, were all connected to former Senator William Bracken (Jack Coleman), as it turned out that the one after them was a powerful and very dirty CIA analyst, who was Bracken’s silent partner, and who would do anything to keep his or her identity a secret.
In the end, unable to get rid of this obsession to find justice for her fallen comrades, and to protect her husband, Beckett decided to leave him for the time being, promising that she still loved him and that she hoped that he would take her back once everything is over.
Of course, this caused the fans of the series to be in shock, and to be enraged at Beckett’s decision.
Recently, show runners Terence Paul Winter and Alexi Hawley had an exclusive interview with TV Line, in order to shed some light on their decision to do this, and was to what fans should expect as the season goes along.
In the interview, the pair expressed their hope that fans of the series will still keep on watching in order to see what these drastic changes will bring to the series. According to them, this has managed to let the actors play around a little bit with their dynamics, and promised that everything will pay off in the end, as they are also heavily invested in Castle’s and Beckett’s relationship, and hope that fans and viewers will look forward to seeing their journey from here on out.
With regards to Castle himself, Castle will be trying to figure out how to still work alongside Beckett, or at least, with the twelfth precinct; and will probably be trying to figure out what Beckett isn’t telling him at the moment, as he knows that some things are still there that she is keeping from him. However, the show runners stated that Castle will be very positive about the things.
Meanwhile, on Beckett’s side, it is obvious that she is very much in love with Castle, and he is very much in love with her, but she has decided to do this in order to protect him, and, in a way, to be able to find inner peace. She is hoping that after this case, she will not be compelled to find another case to obsess over. However, Castle doesn’t know this yet.
They also stated that this season will feel like the first few seasons of “Castle,” but with a richer layer, as the two have a long history with each other now, and promise that there will be another big shift in the fall finale and the entire season will not be riddled with angst.
However, with the series itself, there will be a very big change with its scheduling, as, according to a report on TV Line, “Castle” will be taking a surprising winter hiatus, as it will air its fall finale in November, and will not return until February.
This of course, will leave fans impatient for February, as previously stated above, the fall finale will end with another major change.
