More than twenty years ago, a brand-new medical drama about doctors and nurses in the emergency room became a hit series. NBC’s “E.R.” (Emergency Room) graced television screens in 1994 all the way to 2009. There have been other medical dramas since then, such as “House M.D.” and the hit television series “Grey’s Anatomy.” However, CBS is now looking forward in entering the world of medical dramas, as Deadline reports that the network has put a pilot commitment to a new medical drama from Michael Seitzman entitled “Code Black.” Read on to learn more about this story.

The new television series that CBS had put out a pilot order for is based on “Code Black,” a hard-hitting documentary that was written and directed by Ryan McGarry. The show’s name, according to Deadline, refers to a term given in urban emergency rooms, when there are too many patients and not enough doctors.  The title is fitting as the documentary follows a group of young doctors who work in the emergency room of the Los Angeles County Hospital, one of the busiest emergency rooms in the United States. These doctors not only have to face the cases that are rushed in, but they also have to deal with hospital bureaucracy and its system, as well as the emotional turmoil that it entails, especially when patients die in the Emergency Room as they were not able to treat them because they are understaffed.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new drama will follow a young doctor who joins the emergency room staff. Just like the documentary, the series will focus on how the young doctor deals with the fact that not all of the patients who come in are treated, and some end up dying, as they don’t have enough doctors to treat them all.

The series will be written by Michael Seitzman (“Intelligence,” “Americana”). He will also serve as the executive producer, alongside Ryan McGarry, Linda Goldstein Knowlton and Marti Noxon. It will be produced by ABC Studios and is a joint project between ABC and CBS.

And that’s the latest news on the new CBS medical drama, “Code Black.” It will be based on the 2013 Ryan McGarry’s documentary of the same name. For more news and updates on upcoming and currently airing television shows, keep on following Movie News Guide (MNG).
