In celebration of 20 years of NBC’s hit TV show, “Friends,” a pop-up replica of the Central Perk was set up in SoHo where fans can experience what it felt to have hung out with Joey, Chandler, Ross, Rachel, Monica and Phoebe. Read on to learn more about this scoop.
Located at 199 Lafayette St., at the corner of Broome Street, the pop-up replica shop was set up to mark the 20th anniversary of the sitcom, serving free cups of Eight O’Clock Coffee, as well as the brand’s limited-edition Central Perk Roast, specially created for the occasion, complete with an old-fashioned cash register, service sign and cappuccino maker just like those on the show. A framed collection of autographed copies of cast photos and scripts from the pilot and all episodes throughout the show’s run was put in display.
The Central Perk featured props from the show including the iconic orange couch and a dark green chair and coffee table amidst a scrim designed to look like the Central Perk window and front door. The pop-up shop also served as a museum of sorts, putting on display some of memorabilia and iconic costumes worn by the main cast including:
Monica’s see-through singing ensemble; Ross’ leather pants before he unsuccessfully tried to get them unstuck with powder and lotion; the outfit Joey was wearing when his beloved chair Rosita “died”; and other outfits worn by Phoebe, Rachel and Chandler and smaller props such as Chandler and Monica’s wedding rings, invitations and vows among others. On Tuesday night, fans and press got the chance to see James Michael Tyler who played Gunther in the sitcom. Tyler introduced a performance from “The Rembrandts,” who performed three of their original compositions and a tuneful, energetic rendition of the shows iconic theme, “I’ll Be There For You.”
In commemoration of the event, TBS will air a “Friends” marathon, showcasing 20 fan-selected episodes on Monday, Sept. 22, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Central Perk pop-up shop will run on course from Sept. 17, 2014 to Oct. 18, 2014.
