After seeing the first trailer of the sci-fi movie “Chappie,” people may have written it off as another cute movie about a robot. Guess again.
This new teaser clip from the director of “District 9” Neil Blomkamp shows a bit more about the premise of the movie. In the clip, it tells about a robot with its own consciousness and then it shifts into hard action. The director also scales down the bigger sociopolitical themes compared to his other film “Elysium.” The movie focuses more on future where robots are the law enforcers and are on the frontlines of peace keeping.
“Chappie” began to be noticed by a lot of sci-fi movie fans as one of the most anticipated films of the year, but the first trailer threw them for a loop and started to have doubts about the overall treatment of the film, which showed it to more “Pinocchio” less “Terminator” back when it was still good.
Sure the robot likes to watch cartoons and tries to act like a normal person, but the trailer also shows how much Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver’s characters don’t like that. And since it’s highlighting the hard action aspect of the film, the clip also shows flipping cars, guns, and explosions left and right suggesting this anything but just cute.
This year is starting to look like the year of the sci-fi film invasion, with movies ranging from the latest installments from the “Jurassic Park” franchise, “Jurassic World,” and another franchise installment “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” “Chappie” will be shown ahead of these two which gives audiences a breathing space when the sci-fi film marathon goes into overdrive.
