A Furiosa prequel movie could still happen two years after Mad Max: Fury Road. While doing press rounds for her new movie, Atomic Blonde, Charlize Theron stated that she is willing to reprise the role in a new movie.

Furiousa’s Origin Story

It has been two years since Mad Max: Fury Road landed on the big screen and became a runaway box office success, but a sequel is yet to be approved. However, Theron is ready to shave her head once more and become the heroine of the desolate dystopian world created by George Miller.

“I’d love to,” the Academy Award winner stated when asked about a new Mad Max movie (via Variety). “There were three scripts. They were written as back stories to Max’s character and to Furiosa’s character.”

However, the decision still lies on Miller who was the brain behind the original Mad Max trilogy. He also revived the franchise with new heroes, Theron’s Furiosa and Tom Hardy’s titular Max, two years ago.

“[A]t the end of the day, this thing lives and breathes with George,” she added. “I think Warner Bros. knows that. We are all waiting for him to show us the way.”

As mentioned, Mad Max: Fury Road was a critical and commercial success when it was released in 2015. It earned a total of six Academy Awards after grossing $378.9 million at the global box office. That said, fans surely want to see a sequel or a prequel on the big screen, especially if it will be about fan-favorite,  Furiosa.

A prequel movie about Furiosa would definitely be an interesting story to tell. The movie could tell how the heroine ended up under the rule of Immortan Joe and how she went from one of his best soldiers to betraying him by freeing “The Five Wives.”

Moreover, a solo Furiosa movie would also mean that Theron does not have to work with Hardy. The two allegedly had a few disagreements on the set of the movie, something that their co-star, Zoe Kravitz, confirmed in an interview with Andy Cohen.

She stated that tensions were high because of filming. The cast and crew were in a desert for six months and, unfortunately, put everyone on edge. Kravitz compared the experience to summer camp wherein everyone has an issue with somebody.

“I actually don’t know if it was one issue,” she stated. “I just think they weren’t vibing.”

What Miller Had To Say

The existence of the scripts are indications that a new movie could still be released. Miller himself confirmed the existence of the prequel scripts in an earlier interview. Unfortunately, he could not say when the movie could start production.

“We dug down deep into the subtext, the backstory of all the characters, and indeed the world…and without really thinking about it, we wrote two other screenplays just as part of the bible of the stories,” the filmmaker stated. “Somewhere, if the planets align, there will be two other films.”

Meanwhile, Hardy also wants to come back and reprise the role of Max Rockatansky. He told Collider earlier this year that he is just waiting for Miller to call him into the set.

“I’m really just waiting for the call like, ‘All right, let’s get the leathers on and get back out there and do some more,'” he said. “It’s there. I’m just waiting for it and looking forward to it.”

He also confirmed that he has signed to do three Mad Max movies including Mad Max: The Wasteland, a sequel to Fury Road. However, right now, development is yet to move forward.
