Chris Martin is being sued by paparazzo Richard Terry for an alleged act of violence that was even witnessed by the musician’s ex-girlfriend Gwyneth Paltrow. The incident supposedly took place in the premises of the Giorgio Baldi restaurant in Santa Monica, California just as the musician was trying to leave in his car.
Based on details from documents that E! News obtained, the lawsuit alleges that Chris Martin intentionally tried to hit Richard Terry with the musician’s Jeep as Terry was standing on the sidewalk trying to take photos of Gwyneth Paltrow, who was also in the vehicle when the incident happened.
Filed on Monday, Terry’s lawsuit lobs some pretty serious charges against Chris Martin, who allegedly has a “significant history of repeated and ongoing violent acts” against the paparazzi and believes Martin’s action were “intentional, malicious and oppressive” and meant to “hurt, injure, embarrass and otherwise harm” the photographer. Furthermore, Terry claims to have suffered “permanent and serious injuries” that are both physical and mental, which behoove him to demand from Martin payment for his medical bills, damage to property (equipment), the cost of the suit, and a sum in excess of the minimum jurisdiction of the court.
Both Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow have not reacted or issued a statement regarding the lawsuit.
On the other hand, some sources say that Richard Terry only got what was coming to him in the first place—Terry had a reputation among the paparazzi for getting too close to the face of celebrities he was trying to photograph. In fact, he has earned some degree of infamy for getting himself in hairy situations all too often. In a 2010 interview on Neon Tommy, he was described to take pride in putting his video camera unusually close to celebrities’ faces—“closer that is actually necessary to get a good shot.”
