With Warner Bros. (WB) pushing the release date of its superhero movie “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” the DC Comics movie franchise has just dodged a bullet with a supposed May 6, 2016 superhero-movie showdown with Disney and Marvel’s third installment of their “Captain America” franchise. Read on for more details on this story.

“Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” is an upcoming superhero team-up movie which will follow the story of both Batman and Superman, along with some other known DC characters — Wonder Woman, Cyborg, Aquaman — set after the events of “Man of Steel,” where Henry Cavill will reprise his role as Superman. The ensemble cast will also include Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Ray Fisher as Victor Stone/Cyborg, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane and Jeremy Irons. “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” is written by Chris Terrio, with Zack Snyder as director.

According to Deadline, WB’s switch of strategy was for setting the tent pole of two new superhero flicks in a long line of upcoming DC Comics movie titles spanning up to the year 2020, beginning the clash of the two comic powerhouses.

Earlier, WB has announced plans for a “Justice League” movie — WB’s answer to Marvel’s superhero team-up juggernaut, “The Avengers.” WB’s release strategy will span nine DC titles from years 2016 to 2020, with two films for 2016 and 2017, three in 2018, two more in 2019 and another three by 2020.

On the other hand, Disney has announced confirmed release dates for five untitled movies slotted for the June 28, 2017, Nov. 3, 2017, July 6, 2018, Nov. 2, 2018 and May 3, 2019, of which an announced “Doctor Strange” title may appear, along with four more announced titles — “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “Ant-Man” for 2015, “Captain America 3” for 2016, and a sequel to the recent box-office hit, “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

Moreover, Marvel along with Sony, has undated the movies “Amazing Spider-Man 3” and “Amazing Spider-Man 4” to be released on June 10, 2016 and on May 4, 2018 respectively during the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con event. They will now feature a “Spiderman” spinoff, “The Sinister Six,” based on a Marvel Super-Villain team-up of the same name for Nov. 11, 2016, putting it in the hands of writer-director Drew Goddard. Other Spidey spinoffs to be released are an untitled female Spiderverse movie and a Venom Carnage movie — think of the symbiotes — set for an unannounced date in 2017. The “Amazing Spider-Man 3” will be released by 2018.

The 20th Century Fox enters the superhero wars with its reboot film of “Fantastic Four,” “X-Men: Age of Apocalypse,” “The Wolverine 2,” “Fantastic Four 2” and an untitled superhero flick.
