Universal Pictures has set the date for its adaptation of the best-selling children’s book “Clifford the Big Red Dog.” Read on for more details about this story.
Deadline has reported that Universal Pictures is in production of its live-action, animated 3D film, “Clifford the Big Red Dog” based on Norman Bridwell’s best-selling children’s book of the same name. The feature film has been set to be releases on April 8, 2016, with Scholastic Media’s Deborah Forte to produce the pic, with David Bowers taking the helm and “Sorcerer’s Apprentice’s” Matt Lopez to pen the screenplay. Earlier, Lopez was also set to write the screenplay for just-announced “The Day the Crayons Quit” project feature, based on another best-selling children’s book. The titular dog character will be animated in 3D, while the other characters will be in live-action.
“Clifford the Big Red Dog” is a series of books that was first published in 1963 and was produced later into a TV show on PBS Kids, which aired from 2000 to 2003. The series follows on the adventures of Emily Elizabeth, a friendly, curious and helpful eight year-old girl and Clifford, a friendly, helpful and devoted red dog being about 25-feet tall from paws to head. Clifford was a birthday present for Emily Elizabeth, but no one would ever imagine that a small red puppy would grow up to over 25 feet. And so, the Howard family is forced to leave the city and move to the open spaces of Birdwell Island.
The best-selling book has helped establish Scholastic Books to be a premier publishing company, making the eponymous dog their official mascot. Clifford has spanned into several other books including “Clifford Gets a Job,” “Clifford Takes a Trip,” “Clifford’s Halloween,” “Clifford’s Tricks,” “Clifford, the Small Red Puppy,” “Clifford’s Riddles,” “Clifford’s Good Deeds,” “Clifford at the Circus,” “Clifford Goes to Hollywood,” “Clifford’s Valentines,” “Clifford the Champion,” “Clifford Makes the Team” and many more. Bridwell’s other successful books include “The Witch Next Door” and “A Tiny Family,” with over 126 million copies printed in 13 languages.
