After airing four seasons and a handful of episodes of Sherlock, discussions have been going around for a new season.

Unfortunately, fans should not get their hopes up because one of the show’s co-creators just shared what he thinks about a new season.

Mark Gatiss’ thoughts about Sherlock new season

Screen Rant reported that Sherlock co-creator and star Mark Gatiss gave a statement about a potential new season. He has been a part of the show since the first season and has played a very important role in it.

Apart from playing Mycroft, Sherlock’s older brother, he is also one of the brains behind the show. He revealed the scope on a possible new season.

He believes that since scheduling Sherlock has become really difficult, it kills the possibility of planning or making a new season. Part of it is because the fame lead stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have achieved.

Ever since the show became a hit, the two have become major names in the entertainment industry. Today, they have acquired major roles that they are committed to thus coming back to Sherlock proves to be more difficult.

For instance, both Cumberbatch and Freeman are part of the MCU where they play important roles. Currently, a major event will take place in MCU, which will keep both of them busy for a long time.

So if they will be busy working on their respective movies, they might not have much time to work on a new season. Additionally, Gatiss and Steve Moffat have their own work going, which further hinders the possibility of another season.

Gatiss also recalled that the scheduling problem has been around since the last season. It was difficult filming because of the availability of the lead stars. Going by all these problems, Gatiss believes that wrapping up the show is the best way to go.

About Sherlock

Airing on BBC One, Sherlock is a modern day interpretation of the fictional detective. The detective and his associate both live in present-day London as they use their skills to help police solve crimes.

Their first meeting was also quite interesting. Dr. Watson was looking for a roommate when he bumped into Sherlock. It was also in the first season that Sherlock’s deduction skills got both him and Dr. Watson in the limelight.

Throughout the show, both of them in a way became celebrities as they started taking on major cases. Dr. Watson used to blog about his adventures with Sherlock, which garnered thousands of followers.

Characters on the show

The characters on the show are the same classic ones that were in the books. There is Sherlock Holmes, his best friend Dr. John. H. Watson, Holmes’ older brother Mycroft, archrival James Moriarty and other supporting characters.

The whole conflict between Holmes and Moriarty was a pivotal point for the majority of the show. Moriarty did meet his end but even after his death, his presence was teased here and there. The conflict between them was also a way to test who was the more superior one out of the two.

Potential future season

This is not the first time Gatiss has spoken about not being able to make a new season. But if scheduling really is the problem it could be a few years before a new season of the show is announced. Also, fans might not be ready to let go of Sherlock just yet, which puts a big question mark on the future of the show.

Plot and premiere date

Created by Gatiss and Moffat, the crime drama dealt with Holmes’ classic detective stories set in modern day London. The show won many awards and was a critical success as well.

It catapulted Cumberbatch and Freeman to global fame who until then had done some decent work. Sherlock first premiered in the UK on July 25, 2010 and in the US on Oct. 24 the same year.
