“Code Black” Season 1 Episode 4  “Sometimes It’s A Zebra” aired last Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at 10:00 PM on CBS. In this episode, Dr. Mario Savetti (Benjamin Hollingsworth) started realizing that making friends with the other residents was important, and Dr. Christa Lorenson (Bonnie Somerville) had to learn how to get over her fear of treating patients who were children, especially if she had to do a procedure on them, in the Emergency Room. Also, the Angels Memorial Hospital got a new surgical attending in Dr. Cole Guthrie (Cress Williams), the estranged son of Dr. Rollie Guthrie (William Allen Young).  Read on to learn more about this episode.

Right after Dr. Taylor (Kevin Dunn) introduced the new surgical attending, Dr. Cole Guthrie (Cress Williams), the estranged son of Dr. Rollie Guthrie (William Allen Young), Dr. Leanne Rorish (Marcia Gay Harden), Dr. Neal Hudson (Raza Jaffrey) and Dr. Rollie Guthrie and residents Dr. Malaya Pineda (Melanie Chandra), Dr. Christa Lorenson (Bonnie Somerville) and Dr. Angus Leighton (Harry Ford) got to work as three fire victims came in.

The eldest, Dennis (Glenn Morshower) wasn’t that badly burned, but his daughter, Tina (Sigrid Owen) had to have a tube inserted so that she could breathe. They also had to drill into the leg of her baby, Tommy, in order to get a line inside of him, but Christa balked, and handed the drill to Hudson.

Later, Leanne told her that it was hard for her to do procedures on children since she lost a child, and told her that she would have to get over it sooner or later.

Leanne also scolded Cole as he had told Malaya to do another procedure, even if his father had told her to do something else. It was made clear that he didn’t like Angels Memorial, and his father, and was annoyed to learn that his father had recommended him, which was why he had gotten the job.

Meanwhile, Angus and Dr. Mario Savetti (Benjamin Hollingsworth) tried to help out a patient who was clearly a psychiatric case, but, to their surprise, Senior Resident Nurse Jesse Salander (Luis Guzman) managed to fix her up and she was released.

Mario also attended to, along with Jesse and Leanne, an alcoholic chef who was currently undergoing alcohol withdrawal as he wanted to be sober for his daughter’s wedding the next day.

At a certain point, he took a turn for the worse, so Leanne had some alcohol placed into his system, so that they could wean him off gradually without going into shock. In order to get him to focus, Christa talked to him about his daughter.

Meanwhile, Malaya attending to a mother and daughter pair, where the daughter, a studious girl named Keesha Platt (Ajiona Alexus), had been throwing up, was nauseous, and had bruises on her legs.

At first, Malaya thought that she was pregnant, as she had tested positive for it, but after discovering that Keesha didn’t go out with boys in order to study, and after using Angus as a sounding board, she realized that Keesha had a brain tumor. Later, she and Rollie informed the pair regarding what they had found.

While this was happening, Christa apologized to Neal about not being able to help out properly, and explained what had happened to her son.

They then started to worry about Tommy, and Neal ordered additional tests to see if there had been anything wrong before the fire. Tina then came close to dying  several times as she kept on trying to remove the tube that allowed air to enter her body, and before one episode, wrote on a pad that she had been kidnapped by Dennis, who was later arrested.

It turned out that she had started the fire in order for them to get rescued. Meanwhile, Mario lost a patient as Darrell Bridges (Doug Haley), who had overdosed on some drugs, refused to stay put, and got loose of his restraints while Mario wasn’t looking, as he couldn’t have asked the other residents to help keep an eye on him.

Thankfully, he was found seizing on the streets, and after reading the reports quickly, it was discovered that he had overdosed on his anti-depressants, which they managed to counteract just in time.

Afterwards, Leanne told Mario that he got lucky, and reminded him that he couldn’t survive there alone. Later, he saw Christa, Angus and Malay going off to have breakfast together after shift, although Christa had been invited by Neal, but decided not to talk to them.

Meanwhile, Christa managed to get over her fear of doing procedures on babies, even though she refused to do a spinal tap on him to see what was wrong with him, when she realized that she was the only one available to drain out the fluid from his chest fast, as he had meningitis, and managed to save him.

Later, Rollie confronted his son, and told him that he was acting like a child. However, Cole ignored his father.

In the mean time, Mario discovered from Leanne that the chef made it through, but that he wouldn’t be attending his daughter’s wedding as she had died ten years ago on her wedding day, and that he came in during that time, as it was a grief ritual.
