By fall 2014, production for “The Comedians” on FX will begin. The 13-episode series will star Billy Crystal and Josh Gad. Read on to learn more about this show.

First confirmed for pick up in March via Deadline, the comedy series, which was based on a Swedish comedy series, “Ulveson and Herngren,” has been picked up by cable network FX for its 2015 slot.

“The Comedians” is a story about a veteran comedian (Crystal) who has to work with a newer and younger comic (Gad) in a comedy sketch show. Matt Oberg, Stephanie Weir and Megan Ferguson have also been cast as the other series regulars.

Crystal wrote the project’s pilot episode, with the help of Ben Wexler and Matt Nix. The latter is the series creator of “Burn Notice.” Larry Charles, who has done “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” was tasked to direct the pilot, while Stockholm’s Carl Molinder and John Nordling of the production outfit Efti AB will be giving a hand as executive producers, along with Mikkel Bondesen and Henrik Bastin from Fabrik Entertainment.

The decision to pick up the series was quick, with Nick Grad, FX’s President of Original Programming, remarking that they were quite excited to have Billy Crystal back on television. The show, according to Grad, is promising and can become one of the best comedies.

Crystal was active on television more than 30 years ago, having starred on “Soap” — the comedy series that ran from 1977 to 1981 on ABC.

“When I saw it I thought, ‘I could really like doing this.’ I’m going to play myself; it’s a chance to do live sketches, it’s a chance to act, it’s a chance to improvise. And when we land the other actor — who’s going to be a really good, strong name as well, and a talented person — we’re going to have really something special. So I thought … ‘I would like to do that,'” said Crystal in a previous interview with Zap2it.

“The Comedians” has been in development since 2013, and its pick-up in March was done along with FX’s “Married” and “You’re the Worst” — two comedies that are already enjoying their summer run in the cable network.

“The Comedians” is slated to debut in 2015.

So there you have it for Billy Crystal’s much-awaited return to television, which is slowly taking shape in “The Comedians” on FX. Follow more news about this show only here on Movie News Guide (MNG).
