Deadline was the first to report that Sony Pictures Television (SPT) has finalized the show’s sixth season deal with Yahoo!. It was said that “Community” Season 6 will have 13 episodes for the entire season. It was also reported that “Community” creator Dan Harmon will also return as executive producer alongside Russ Krasnoff, Gary Foster and Chris McKenna.
Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht, SPT co-presidents of programming and production, confirmed the Season 6 revival on Yahoo! Screen. Erlicht noted that the #SixSeasonsAndAMovie won’t be achieved without a sixth season. The news was announced ahead of the June 30 deadline of the contracts of several cast members.
“The fans spoke and we listened. Thanks to Yahoo, and the amazing team that makes Community great, we’ve avoided the Darkest Timeline yet again and plan to deliver a fantastic season,” said Van Amburg in the Deadline article.
Moreover, Harmon and several cast members of the series have expressed their happiness over the great news. Harmon jokingly warned “The Big Bang Theory” that they will dominate the new competition online.
McHale, on the other hand, tweeted a very “emotional” message about it. He wrote: “‘The reports of our cancellation have been greatly exaggerated.’ —Mark Twain (The other version of this quote has been wrong for years). #SixSeasonsAndaMovie is real. Thank you Sony. Thank you Yahoo. Thank you Dan Harmon. And thank you to the greatest f%$#ing fans in the history of the human race. It’s the internet. We can swear now.”
During the 2014 May Sweeps, NBC has cancelled “Community” along with the network’s freshman series including “Revolution,” “Growing Up Fisher,” “Believe,” “Crisis” and “Dracula.” “Community” was cancelled after its fifth season. It was due to the continuous drop in ratings despite being saved for several times from cancellation.
The cancellation was not accepted by the show’s strong following and shared their laments on social networking sites. Movie News Guide (MNG) previously reported that Harmon and the producers had been looking for a “new home” for the wacky students of Greendale Community College.
There have been deals from several networks and upcoming streaming service. Hulu was pointed out to be a great home as they already got the streaming rights for the entire five seasons of the series. Despite the speculations, TV Line finally reported that the digital deal did not push through between the series and Hulu.
