“Covert Affairs” Season 5 Episode 13 “ She Believes” aired last Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014, at 10:00 p.m. on USA Network. In this episode, Ryan McQuaid (Nic Bishop) teamed up with the CIA in order to try to find CIA technical operator and handler Auggie Anderson (Christopher Gorham). He had been kidnapped by Aleksandre Balenko (Shawn Doyle). Meanwhile, in Germany, Annie Walker (Piper Perabo), after a surprising discovery, teamed up with FSB agent Olga Akarova (Lynn Collins) in order to hunt down Balenko. Read on to learn more about this episode.

The episode picked up where the previous episode left off. In Washington DC, Ryan McQuaid (Nic Bishop) went to CIA technical operator Auggie Anderson’s (Christopher Gorham) building. However, he became suspicious when his operative, Pete, who had been protecting Auggie, did not check in as per their protocols. Auggie wasn’t answering his cell phone. After finding a watch on the street, he immediately called Joan Campbell (Kari Matchett), Auggie’s boss and the head of the Domestic Protection Division, about what had happened.

In Essen, Annie Walker (Piper Perabo), who had been rescued by FSB agent Olga Akarova (Lynn Collins) questioned her as to why the FSB was after Aleksandre Belenko (Shawn Doyle). Olga then revealed to her that she was working outside the agency as they had not heeded her warnings about Balenko. Therefore, she had decided to kill him herself. She also told her that they should be working together as they would only be stepping on each other’s toes in Frankfurt. Balenko was headed there with minimal security because his meeting with Dr. Shumer was illicit. Annie then decided to team up with her. In the car, Olga revealed that she had still had some resources within the FSB, which would help them identify Shumer more quickly. They then agreed that once they saw Balenko during the meeting, they would be able to get a clean shot of him. Annie’s phone then rang, but she refused to take the call in front of Olga, which did not bother her.

As it happened, it turned out that Joan had been trying to reach Annie in order to read her into what had happened. As she did not pick up her phone, Joan left a voice message in which she told Annie to call her up as soon as possible. She then told Ryan that they were going to use all their resources in order to locate Auggie, which they had to do fast as the first 48 hours were usually the most critical. She then wondered why Ryan and Annie had kept her in the dark about this. Ryan told her that Auggie had tried to bring it to her, but to no avail. They were then interrupted by the Director of Clandestine Services, Calder Michaels (Hill Harper), who revealed that security camera footage had shown that Allen Langer, one of Ryan’s former employees, was one of the men who kidnapped Auggie and that was the reason why he had been able to take down Pete. Eric Barber then informed them that they located the van that Auggie had been driven away in Baltimore. Calder then allowed Ryan to go with Joan, as one of his own, Pete, was also out there.

At Baltimore, near the docks, they discovered Pete’s body in the harbor and the empty van. They then realized that Auggie had been placed on a boat on a shipping container and had probably been smuggled out of the country.

In Frankfurt, Annie called up Auggie, who was not picking up, as she could not reach Joan or Ryan at all. She and Olga were seated at different tables at a café, waiting for Dr. Shumer. He was a neurologist who had lost his license three years ago. After he appeared, they tailed him. While they walked, Ryan called her up to inform her on what had happened and apologized for not being able to keep Auggie safe. As he could literally be anywhere in the world right now, Annie’s drive to get Balenko intensified, as he was now the only person who could tell her where Auggie was. She then told Olga that they were going to capture him first to make him talk. She needed him alive so that he could help her find out where Auggie was. She then revealed to Olga that she believed that Dr. Shumer was meeting up with Balenko to treat a condition of his, as she had noticed in Istanbul that Balenko’s hand had been shaking. She then asked Olga to give her a chance to try and turn the doctor, so that he would be their way in.

Back at Langley, Ryan told them not to send anyone in to help Annie, as it might blow the entire mission, to which Joan agreed. Ryan then told them that he would try to reach out to some contacts of theirs to figure out where Langer had gone. They had contracted an underground smuggling syndicate before to help them out in a classified mission for the Department of Defense. In the meantime, Joan told Calder that McQuaid Securities and her husband, Arthur Campbell (Peter Gallagher), were analyzing metadata in order to figure out what the connection was between Balenko and Auggie’s unit. Calder then told Joan that they could use Sydney to get more out of Mashkov and his connection to the FSB by making a big risk — they would grab him and use him themselves.

Back in Frankfurt, Annie approached Shumer. She told him that he would help them out or else she would reveal to Balenko that Shumer had talked to her as Olga was currently taking pictures of them talking. Shumer then revealed that he had been giving Balenko regular spiel injections, which alleviated the symptoms of his neurodegenerative disease. He had only agreed to help him out years ago as he had just lost his license and needed money, but now, as he knew what kind of man Balenko was, he wanted out. Annie then told him that he was going to be the one to drug Balenko in order to knock him out. While he switched the drugs, Annie learned that Balenko usually took two bodyguards with him during their appointments. Because of this, Annie decided to rent the room beside his.

Back in Washington DC, Calder met up with Sydney (Nazneen Contractor) in the fruit and vegetable market. She revealed to him that she was going to have another date with him during his lunch hour and that he had already fallen in love with her. Calder then handed her a bug and instructed her to plant it on him as they knew that he was going to have a meeting that afternoon with some high-ranking Russians. He asked her to do this this early in the game as Auggie’s life was currently at stake. During their quick date at her place, she was able to quickly plant the bug on his suit.

At the docking yard at the harbor, Ryan paid off one of the dock workers in order to get information on an old contact of his named Danny Vostis, who Langer might have reached out to for help in order to get out of the country quietly.

Back in Germany, Olga warned Annie that Balenko and his two bodyguards were on their way up. Annie finished planting a hidden camera. She then instructed Shumer to signal the camera once Balenko had been knocked out. She then hid in the room next door.

Balenko then had the room checked by his bodyguard before going in to be alone with the doctor. As Shumer prepared the injection, Balenko asked him if everything was okay as he seemed nervous. As Balenko had noticed that something was off, he attacked Shumer. Annie then came in and injected him before he turned and tried to choke her. Luckily, he was not successful. He became unconscious. Olga, dressed up as a hotel maid then came in the nick of time in order to knock out Balenko’s bodyguards who got suspicious and tried to come inside the room. They then placed Balenko in the trunk of their car. Annie told Shumer to get as far away from them as fast as he could. This way, Balenko would not bother him anymore. Before they drove off to Olga’s safe house, Annie stopped her from killing Balenko. Olga then revealed to Annie that she was correct in guessing that her quest for getting Balenko was personal. She then told Annie that Balenko had killed her husband in retribution. She had reported him to her superiors after he had tried to seduce her into helping him. Annie then reassured her that she could do to him whatever she wants after she got some information from Balenko.

Back in Washington DC, Mashkov was taken by surprise as he was suddenly grabbed at the market and was forced into a black car. Joan and Calder then confronted him and told him that unless he cooperated with them, they would tell the FSB that he was a traitor selling secrets to them, since they had a recording of the meeting that he had just gone to. He then decided to cooperate with Joan and Calder.

In Olga’s safe house, they tied him to a chair, and Annie threatened to hurt him if he did not tell them where Auggie was. He then told her that he wasn’t worried at all, even if Annie knew that he had been sloppy in trying to get rid of Tony Salgado. Olga then brought Annie aside and told her to trust her in interrogating Balenko, as he knew that Annie would not be as violent as Olga.

In Baltimore, Ryan tracked Vostis down and threatened to hurt his family if he did not tell him about all he knew about Langer.

In the safe house, Olga cracked Balenko’s finger and drove a screwdriver in his hand while Annie asked him once again where Auggie was. He then told them that he was not afraid to suffer and die and wondered whether Auggie could do the same. He then revealed to Annie that Auggie was alive for now.  However, she was interrupted by a phone call from Ryan, who told her that Langer had been headed for Grazny. He had been suddenly airlifted to Rabat and had just landed in Frankfurt a few minutes ago as he was looking for his boss- Belenko. After Annie told Olga that they had to move the location, Olga discovered that Balenko had a tracking device in his mouth. They were then confronted with shots from outside, which wounded Olga in the stomach. They were able to hide out in a random apartment while Balenko escaped using the elevator. However, as Olga had lost a lot of blood due to the gunshot wound she had sustained, she died.

Afterward, on the street, Annie thanked Calder for sending over a sweep team in order to clear out Olga’s body. She then revealed to Calder and Joan that Balenko revealed that Auggie was alive, and it seemed as if Balenko wanted something from him. Joan then revealed that Arthur had discovered that Balenko had covered up the fact that he wasn’t Georgian. He was originally from Grazny in Chechnya, where Auggie’s unit was deployed several times. Because of the fact that Langer was headed to Grazny, they believe that Auggie was there as well. Joan then asked Annie to run the mission, with the backing of CIA resources. She was probably the only person who would be able to find Auggie. She was then joined by Ryan at an airfield, and together, they boarded a plane to Chechnya in order to get Auggie back.

Meanwhile, in Grazny, Balenko met his man and Auggie beside some train tracks. There, he told Auggie that he did not kill him right away like what he did to the other members of his old unit — Tony Salgado, Charlie Schinderman and Nathan Mueller, as Auggie had something that he wanted. They then brought him to some ruins and dragged him inside.
