The film adaptation of E. L. James erotic novel “Fifty Shades of Grey” has hit a domestic total of $93,010,350 and a foreign total of $172,000,000, with a worldwide gross total of $265,010,350 as of Feb. 16, 2015. Although the film did great in the box office, it received not-so favorable reviews from critics, including Jamie Dornan’s portrayal of Christian Grey. Read on for further details.
“Fifty Shades of Grey” is about the S&M relationship between college student Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) and business mogul Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan). It was directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, from the screenplay of Kelly Marcel. The film opened in U.S. theaters on Feb. 13, 2015, with an R rating.
Rolling Stone’s Chuck Zlotnick referred to Dornan in his review as a “brick wall,” whose acting did not seem to complement his co-star Johnson.
“Either pulverized with fear or embarrassment, Dornan seems to have no idea who or what he is playing. Can’t blame him: Christian has no shades. He’s a human Ken doll with a kinky set of accessories that go unused,” wrote Zlotnick in his review.
Tim Robey of The Telegraph mentioned in his review how Dornan is Grey’s “physical match” in the book.
“Dornan, with his tousled hair and chunky build, is a precise physical match for this ludicrous fantasy-hottie-Bluebeard role, and somehow manages to render it only intermittently absurd. A good kind of absurd,” Robey stated.
Meanwhile, Amy Nicholson of LA Weekly pointed out how Dornan was blank-faced in the film. She noted that the actor’s eyes were cold and judging, “as those of a shark debating the fleshiest part to bite.”
