“Crossbones” Season 1 Episode 1 “The Devil’s Dominion” is directed by “Twilight Saga: Eclipse” director David Spade and written by Neil Cross and James V. Hart & Amanda Welles.
Set in the 1700s, the episode began with the quest for the Crown and the pirates over the magnificent invention of longitude chronometer by Benedict Nightingale.
The English royalty sent Tom Lowe (Richard Coyle) to get the precious device from Nightingale by any means possible even if he gets his hands tainted with blood. Tom continued on his quest accompanied by his assistant, Fletch (Chris Perfetti). They got to Nightingale’s whereabouts first.
On the other side, Nenna Ajanlekoko (Tracy Ifeachor) and Charlie Rider (David Hoflin) were actually on their way to steal the same Nightingale invention. Tom learned about this and destroyed the chronometer in front of Nightingale’s shocked presence. He was in the middle of poisoning its creator when the rogue pirates arrived at the scene.
Neena and Charlie kidnapped all of them. They were immediately delivered to the Santa Campana Island, which was headed by the supposed dead Blackbeard and his pirate members. Blackbeard ordered them that they must keep the inventor alive. In the end, the inventor died and it started to endanger the pirate’s goal to make their own chronometer.
The pirates also gave their superiors a cypher that may help them decode the blueprints. Selena (Yasmine Al Massri), Blackbeard’s right-hand woman/lover, immediately went on torturing Tom to give away the key code. Fletch wanted to save his master and informed Blackbeard about it. Tom has been blackmailed again to decipher the blueprints’ code. This time, Fletcher’s life is on the line.
Unfortunately, Tom was actually given a double purpose for his recent quest. And, that includes assassinating Blackbeard. He had acquired a vial of poison from Blackbeard’s treasure chamber, but he was caught by the quartermaster Kate (Claire Foy). He lied about the necklace and he was allowed to take the treasure for himself.
Back at Blackbeard’s headquarters, the Commodore had mysteriously fallen ill. It was revealed that it was the doings of Tom, who had laced the book pages with poison. Tom and Fletch now had the chance to escape. Then, he sees a member of the Spanish government and thought that it may also endanger the purpose of the Crown. They went back to the island to cure Blackbeard once and for all.

According to Internet Movie Database (IMDB), “Covenant” will begin as the pirates continue with making their own chronometer. The blueprints were supposed to be deciphered by Tom, in which a replica of Nightingale’s original invention would be based on.
Unfortunately, a “popular” pirate captain will arrive at the pirate island. It was said that he would conspire with Blackbeard’s grand plans for the chronometer. Is he the “dangerous old friend” of Blackbeard? Which of Blackbeard’s plans will be endangered by the same man? Whoever the man might be, Blackbeard must make a grave decision.
Tom Lowe was also curious about Blackbeard’s plan. He got no choice but to continue spying on them with Fletch. On the other hand, he also becomes pawn in whatever the Commodore had in mind. Is it about his alleged partnership with the great British enemy, the Spaniards? Can he find out about it on time before it’s too late?
The Hollywood Reporter (THR) reported that “Crossbones” had garnered decent ratings with a total of 4.89 millions U.S. viewers and a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 years old age bracket. It was also said that the show’s schedule at 10:00 p.m. is hard to get a lot of views, but it seemed that NBC’s risky move has been a success. THR also pointed out that it got the same ratings with the February premiere of “Hannibal.”
