“Crossbones” Season 1 Episode 1 “The Devil’s Dominion” (air date: May 30, 2014) is directed by “Twilight Saga: Eclipse” helmer David Spade and written by Neil Cross and James V. Hart and Amanda Welles.
It was during the era of 1700s, Benedict Nightingale invented the longitude chronometer, which sparked the interest of both the British Crown and the rogue pirates.
Nenna Ajanlekoko (Tracy Ifeachor) and Charlie Rider (David Hoflin) were just some of the rogue pirates who wanted to get their hands on the chronometer. They were actually in the middle of their journey to steal the chronometer. Little did they know, someone already got to its whereabouts first.
English spy Tom Love (Richard Coyle), along with his assistant, Fletch (Chris Perfetti), was sent by the Brits to retrieve the most magnificent invention. He was instructed to get it by any means possible, including killing the inventor. He learned about the pirates’ arrival and immediately destroyed the chronometer in front of Nightingale. The pirates arrived when he was in the middle of poisoning its creator.
Tom, Fletch and Nigtingale were immediately delivered by their captors to Santa Campana. It was revealed that the supposed dead Blackbeard ruled in the same pirate island. In the end, the inventor died along with the secret in deciphering the encrypted blueprints.
Selena (Yasmine Al Massri), Blackbeard’s right-hand woman/lover, immediately went on torturing Tom to give away the key code. Fletch tattled her, and Blackbeard learned about it. The pirate leader warned Tom that Fletch’s safety is now in danger. Tom got no choice but to start on deciphering the codes.
On the other hand, Tom was actually given another purpose. The Blackbeard was still alive, and Tom was tasked to assassinate Blackbeard. He was caught by Kate (Claire Foy) stealing a necklace from the room.
Back at Blackbeard’s headquarters, the Commodore had mysteriously fallen ill. It was revealed that Tom poisoned the book pages with the necklace. Tom and Fletch now had the chance to escape. On their way, he saw a member of the Spanish government and thought that it may also endanger the purpose of the Crown. They went back to the island to cure Blackbeard once and for all.

According to Internet Movie Database (IMDb), “Covenant” will begin as the pirates continue with making their own chronometer. The blueprints were supposed to be deciphered by Tom, in which a replica of Nightingale’s original invention would be based on.
Unfortunately, a “popular” pirate captain will arrive at the pirate island. It was said that he would conspire Blackbeard’s grand plans for the chronometer. Is he the “dangerous old friend” of Blackbeard? Which of Blackbeard’s plans would be endangered by the same man? Whoever the man might be, Blackbeard must make a grave decision.
Tom Lowe is also curious about Blackbeard’s plan. He has no choice but to continue on spying on them with Fletch. On the other hand, he also becomes pawn in whatever the Commodore has in mind. Is it about his alleged partnership with the great British enemy, the Spaniards? Can he figure it out on time before it’s too late?
Meanwhile, the Hollywood Reporter (THR) reported that the “Crossbones” had garnered decent ratings with 4.89 total million of U.S. viewers and 1.1 rating in the 18-49 age bracket. It was also said that the show’s schedule at 10:00 p.m makes it hard to get a lot of views, but it seemed that NBC’s risky move has been a success. THR also pointed out that it got the same ratings with the February premiere of “Hannibal.”
