Another pirate-themed television series lands ashore to compete with the 2014 series “Black Sails” from the Starz network. It’s definitely an explosive showdown that we should out for as NBC officially ordered a fresh season of the upcoming pirate drama series. It will premiere on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 10 p.m. on NBC. Check out the “Crossbones” trailer for the first look at NBC’s newest TV series starring John Malkovich (“Being John Malkovich,” “Red” and “Red 2”).
According to The Futon Critic, NBC Entertainment chief Robert Greenblatt had officially announced that the network gave the show a straight-to-series order as early as 2012. “Crossbones” was helmed by critically-acclaimed creator of the Brit drama “Luther.”
Zap2it reported that”Crossbones” will join the summer premieres of six original scripted NBC shows including Bill Lawrence’s “Undateable” and the freshman medical drama “Night Shift.” All three will debut in May 2014. “Taxi Brooklyn” will premiere in June while “Welcome to Sweden,” “Working the Engels” and “Food Fighters” will start airing in July 2014.
According to the show’s official synopsis posted on NBC, award-winning veteran actor John Malkovich will star in NBC’s newest miniseries in his first-ever starring role as the legendary pirate Edward “Blackbeard” Teach. It is set in the year of 1729, following the events on the book “The Republic of Pirates” written by Colin Woodward.
His precious invention of the longitude chronometer will bring change to the world and bring chaos in his life. The head pirate, who resides on the secret island of Santa Compana, will be attacked by his own pirate kin to obtain his work.
Little did he know, English spy Tom Lowe (Richard Coyle) is determined to keep Blackbeard’s chronometer safe while he works undercover as the ship’s surgeon. On the other hand, he is also on the mission to assassinate the man and stop his secret master plan to topple the English Royalty.
Yasmine Al Massri will take on the role of Selima El Sharad, Blackbeard’s “equal” in love and intelligence. Selima joins Blackbeard on ruling the pirate island.
Aside from Lowe and Al Massri, other members of the ensemble cast include Claire Foy (Kate), David Hoflin (Charles Rider), Tracy Ifeachor (Nenna), Chris Perfetti (Fletch), Ezra Buzzington (Oswald Eisengrim), Kevin Ryan (Finnegan), Henry Hereford (Frederick Nightingale), Emilien De Falco (Alain Mersault) and Julian Sands (William Jagger).
In an interview with Yahoo TV, “Crossbones” star John Malkovich shared his reason why it took him so long to take on his first regular role in a TV series. He also praised Neil Cross for having a well-written script.
“Neil is a very clever writer. He’s very clever about doing interaction and behavior. Because there are quite a few big, or large-ish, characters in this, it’s a nice kind of ensemble to balance off of. Neil is very good at characterization.” Malkovich said in the Yahoo TV article.
In other news, Deadline reported that “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” director David Slade will head the production of the “Crossbones” Season 1 Premiere Episode 1 “The Devil’s Dominion,” which will air on May 30, 2014.
