It seems like the peacock network is currently on a renewal spree, which will cause much relief for fans of the Dick Wolf “Chicago” franchise, as it has just been announced, right on the heels of the renewal of fellow network series “Blindspot,” that both currently airing “Chicago” shows will live to put more criminals away and will live on to fight more fires as “Chicago PD” and “Chicago Fire” were both renewed, respectively. Aside from this, fans should expect more excitement to come in the upcoming episodes, and especially in the crossover events that will happen as a portion of Sergeant Hank Voight’s (Jason Beghe) past that will be uncovered. Also, it was recently teased that Firehouse 51 will soon see the return of a family member who might not be welcomed back with warm and open arms. WARNING: This article contain spoilers for “Chicago Fire,” “Chicago PD” and an upcoming crossover event with “Law & Order: SVU.” Read on to learn more about what will be happening next on these two “Chicago” shows.
Just moments after it was announced that NBC’s freshman mystery drama, “Blindspot,” had been renewed for a second season, NBC bigwig Bob Greenblatt, according to Entertainment Weekly and The Hollywood Reporter, announced that “Chicago Fire” will be renewed for a fifth season, and that “Chicago PD” will be renewed for a fourth season.
Based on the great batting average of these two Dick Wolf created “Chicago” shows, this allows fans of the “Chicago” franchise some hope when it comes to the upcoming third installment of the franchise, “Chicago Med.”
However, Wolf created show “Law & Order: SVU,” which has also crossed paths with the “Chicago” franchise, as they all exist within the same universe, hasn’t been renewed yet for an eighteenth season.
“SVU,” however, will be having a crossover event with the “Chicago” shows this coming February, but according to show runner and executive producer Matt Olmstead, in a interview with The Hollywood Reporter last month, instead of having a four way crossover, they might just limit it to be a “Chicago PD” and “SVU” crossover, as the two shows have more in common with each other, and as the two teams have good chemistry with each other.
Plus, with the addition of new team members on the side of “SVU,” it would be interesting to see how Sergeant Hank Voight’s (Jason Beghe) team reacts to them.
A crossover between the three “Chicago” shows, though, will definitely be happening in January, and it has been teased that this particular storyline will be pretty personal for both Voight and Detective Erin Lindsay (Sophia Bush) as it will uncover the backstory of Voight’s late wife.
Aside from this, it was teased that actor Treat Williams will be returning to Firehouse 51 as Kelly Severide’s (Taylor Kinney) father, and will help him in deciding his next move, as the lines between duty and interdepartmental politics are beginning to tangle around him.
