In this episode, their latest case forced FBI Special Agent Avery Ryan (Patricia Arquette) to face the hacker who had ruined her; while both FBI Agent Daniel Krumitz (Charley Koontz) and his sister, Francine (Angela Trimbur), were forced to face their parents’ murderer who was currently on parole. Read on to learn more about this episode.
The episode began with ex Black Hat hacker Brody Nelson (Shad Moss) aiming a scope at FBI Special Agent Avery Ryan (Patricia Arquette) from the rooftop of the building opposite her apartment. After getting the file that he wanted, he began to type into the computer it was attached to before he got knocked out by an assailant. However, before he was knocked out, he managed to send a file to his colleague, ex Black Hat hacker Raven Ramirez (Hayley Kiyoko).
The next morning, while both FBI Agent Daniel Krumitz (Charley Koontz) and his sister, Francine (Angela Trimbur), who were having breakfast at a diner, realized that Taylor Pettis (Deron Paul), their parents’ murderer, was in the diner as well. Krumitz then went to him and threatened him before leaving for work.
At the Cyber Threat Operations Center (CTOC), the entire team scrambled around as they tried to figure out how a hacker had managed to leak some confidential recordings onto the internet. They then discovered that all of the people were connected to each other as they were all patients of a psychologist named Dr. Richard Chan. Ryan then wondered where Nelson was as he wasn’t there yet. However, they were too late as Dr. Chan had already been killed.
Meanwhile, Raven, who had gotten extremely worried about Nelson, decided to track down his location by pinging his phone. She then found him on a rooftop, wounded, and tied up. After making sure that Raven had gotten the file he had sent, he ran back to CTOC where Ryan had just realized that her print had been found on the hourglass in Chan’s office, which had been hers.
Nelson then informed Ryan that he had been spying on her as he had been trying to solve the mystery of who her hacker was, and discovered that a remote access Trojan or RAT, had been placed on a particular video file, which, when transferred to another device, infected the other devices as well. Krumitz then discovered that the malicious code on Ryan’s laptop was the same on Dr. Chan’s, which confirmed Ryan’s suspicions that they were dealing with the hacker that ruined her life, and that she had been the target from the very beginning.
A little bit later, FBI Deputy Assistant Director Simon Sifter (Peter MacNicol) pulled Krumitz aside and warned him not to do anything to Taylor Pettis as he had filed a complaint against him when Krumitz had verbally threatened him that morning. He was told then to try to get over his anger towards Pettis.
Later that night, after CTOC got infected with a virus, they realized that Ryan had plugged in the infected flash drive in order to communicate with her hacker, so that they could finally meet face to face. He then gave her several instructions, which led to an abandoned steel factory in Riverside Drive.
Meanwhile, the team discovered that the RAT had originated from Connecticut, in the house of Andrew Michaels (Brent Sexton), who, as it turned out, was Ryan’s ex-husband, who had some of her old office stuff, including her old laptop, their “digital patient zero”.
At the old factory, Ryan stepped into a replica of her office and began to talk to her abductor, whom she later realized was Logan Reeves (David Dastmalchian), a patient whom she had referred to another doctor as he had grown too attached to her. He then told her that she had given up on him and broke the laptop on the table.
Meanwhile, the team realized that Logan was dangerous, and had been the one who had planted the virus onto her laptop, as he had known that she would always keep that particular video, which he had infected with, always.
He then told Ryan that they were going to die of carbon monoxide poisoning together. She then knocked him out and managed to call FBI Special Agent Elijah Mundo (James Van Der Beek), and told him where she was. She then collapsed, and when she came to, discovered that Logan had been arrested.
Later that night, she dropped by her ex-husband’s place, and showed him the video file that she kept- it was video of her, him, and their deceased daughter in the park together. He then apologized as their daughter’s death had driven them apart.
Meanwhile, Sifter discovered that Pettis had been murdered, and Krumitz, who met up with his sister, discovered that she had killed Pettis.
