“CSI: Cyber” Season 1 Episode 1  “Kidnapping 2.0” aired last Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at 10:00 p.m. on CBS. In the premiere episode of the series, the FBI Cyber Division welcomed hacker Brody Nelson (Shad Moss) into their team as they raced against time to rescue a kidnapped baby which led to a baby trafficking ring which used the baby’s Natal Cam’s to case potential victims. Read on to learn more about this episode.

In Baltimore, early in the morning, baby Caleb Reynolds was kidnapped, and placed in front of the baby camera, Natal Cam, which woke his parents who heard foreign sounding voices coming from it. They were then later horrified to discover that their son had been taken, and filed a police report which came to the attention of FBI Special Agent Avery Ryan (Patricia Arquette) who was notified of it by her subordinate, Agent Daniel Krummitz (Charley Koontz).

Later that morning, she got FBI Assistant Director Stavros Sifter (Peter MacNicol) to sign over the case to her Cyber Division as the crime was technological in nature since the Natal Cam was used. Agent Elijah Mundo (James Van Der Beek) then came in to the Cyber Threat Operations Center (CTOC), and informed her that he had gotten in touch with the detective in charge in Baltimore. She then welcomed in hacker Brody Nelson (Shad Moss), who had been caught before, thanks to Krummitz.

At Baltimore, Krummitz and Nelson discovered that the memory card of the Natal Cam had been taken away. A boy living next door told Mundo that he had seen a  woman and a man get into the getaway car and heard the tires screech before it left.  Ryan then discovered from Caleb’s father that he had heard people speaking in German, Arabic and Chinese voices. He said that it sounded like they were having a heated discussion, and when she asked for all their electronic devices, the mother, Fran, tried to sneak a call and got anxious when she asked for a DNA sample.

Because of this, Ryan had Krummitz and Nelson double check Fran’s laptop. When they did, they discovered that it had spy software, which allowed the user to see any email she sent regarding Caleb. After looking at her call history and the DNA results, they determined that she had been calling up a man who worked at a nearby boat company – Bill Hookstraten (Brady Smith), who also had put the software in so that he could see his son, as she had had an affair with him.

They then discovered that the baby boy with him, much to his surprise, wasn’t Caleb. He then informed them that after Fran had told him the news, someone had called with a ransom demand, which he paid. Thanks to the fingerprint, they found the baby’s diaper latch, and figured out that it belonged to Victoria Shala (Rae Gray), a woman convicted of drunk driving. She had a boyfriend named Ricky Scaggs (Jake Richardson), who owned a blue Camaro. They then tracked them down, and found a lot of cash in the trunk, but no Caleb. Before they could talk to them, they were gunned down by a sniper. However, thanks to the memory card found in Ricky’s pocket, they were able to listen in to the voices on the camera, and after translating it, they realized that they had stumbled on a baby trafficking group that auctioned off babies internationally.

Later, they learned that Victoria was a drug mule, and that two other babies whose parents had the Natal Cam, had been abducted, prompting them to send Krummitz to the Natal Cam headquarters in Chicago. There he had the cameras shut down after discovering that there was a weakness in the source code of the cameras.

Because of this, the mastermind of the ring sent a video message to Danny while he was playing. He threatened to kill Caleb if they didn’t turn the cameras back on. Afterwards, Ryan replied that she would turn it back on in thirty minutes, and via the game console, they tracked the sender to New Jersey. There, they and a SWAT team raided the building, where Krummitz discovered that their network was encrypted with a twenty character passcode. Ryan then realized that the leader had the numbers tattooed all over his body, and sent the pictures to Nelson to figure out the arrangement.

After getting into the system, they managed to locate the car that held Caleb to upstate New York. They then chased them down, only to have the car carrying Caleb fall into a lake. Mundo then rescued Caleb and Ryan managed to resuscitate him, and returned him to his parents.

Afterwards, she revealed to Nelson that she wanted to help hackers become better people as she had been hacked before when she was a behavioral psychologist, as that hacker had released all her patient’s files which led to one of them getting murdered. She then revealed that after every case, she would go to the Lincoln Memorial, and plan how to catch the hacker that did that to her.
