When negotiations for Joaquin Phoenix to close the deal for the role went south, the short list of actors being considered to play Doctor Strange was released. As of this writing, Marvel is down to considering Benedict Cumberbatch, Colin Farrell, and Keanu Reeves. Read on for more details to this scoop.
The phase three of Marvel movies has begun to unfold, and it appears the first movie to complete its behind-the-scene thresholds are missing the front man as the main star to play the role of Doctor Strange has yet to be cast. Negotiations to have Joaquin Phoenix to get the titular role had gone south, and Marvel Studios’ list of contenders surfaced online, showing numerous prominent names in the business. However, it is now down to three actors whom they are considering to put the part into action: “Sherlock’s” Benedict Cumberbatch, the recently cast actor for “True Detective” Colin Farrell and “John Wick’s” Keanu Reeves.
According to Screen Rant, Marvel wasn’t really gunning for a Hollywood A-lister to play such role, as their president has previously stated such. However, looking at the names of the contenders, such names are far from being newbies. As a matter of fact, the names mentioned are three of the most highly celebrated actors as of late. Nonetheless, this did not stop Marvel from looking at either one of them to play the master of the dark arts.
The Wrap and Cinema Blend presented both their speculations on who could possibly land the role as they weighed in the availability of the actors. Truly, all three are more than capable of depicting the on-screen version of Doctor Strange, but it should be a matter of schedule for them to assume the role. The first and long planned contender, Benedict Cumberbatch, always had the studio’s eyes set on him. He’s been one of the stable standing stars that made it into the industry with the way he nailed his roles in “Sherlock,” “Star Trek: into The Darkness,” “The Hobbit,” and his most recent, “The Imitation Game.” However, his schedule is far from being friendly as he is set to be in production once more as BBC’s favorite sleuth on the same schedule “Doctor Strange” is set for production next year.
Meanwhile, there’s Colin Farrell who is also tied to HBO’s “True Detective” as he plays as one of the lead roles. He could be done with the series’ production by the time “Doctor Strange” starts, but nothing is set on stone for his engagements with HBO just yet. This leaves us to bestow the role to Keanu Reeves, who has his schedule vacant for the time being and leaves him as the most likely actor to play the role in terms of scheduling. However, his latest movie “John Wick” is picking up the much-needed buzz that could catalyze the creation of another sequel, and that will shift his schedule in a different scale. Marvel Studios will have to make their decision as soon as possible.
