In flashbacks, more of young Matt’s life was revealed, as well as how his father died after fighting the match of his life. Read on to learn more about this episode.
The episode began with a teenager, Santino (Moises Avecedo), getting help from Claire Temple (Rosaria Dawson). It was after seeing a bleeding Matthew “Matt” Murdock (Charlie Cox) in a dumpster. She then tried to dial 911. Matt stopped her and told her that he couldn’t go to a hospital and tried to leave the apartment, only to collapse on the floor.
While he was unconscious, he remembered that when he was younger, he would watch his father’s matches on television and often stitched him up afterwards. He then remembered that his father would always tell him that winning was about getting up from the mat again when one got knocked down.
Meanwhile, Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson), much to his surprise, discovered that their new secretary, Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), hadn’t gone home yet as she couldn’t bring herself to do so. Because of this, they decided to go bar hopping, and Foggy called up Matt to tell him to join them.
At Claire’s apartment, Matt woke up. He became dismayed that Claire had seen his real face. After thanking her, she decided to honor his request not to bring him to the hospital and called him Mike.
While he rested he remembered that when he had first woken up. He realized that he was blind, he had been assaulted by a whole barrage of stimuli- sounds, vibrations, and smells, and it took his father’s presence to calm him down.
In the present day, he woke up as he couldn’t breathe as there was air in his chest, which Claire soon remedied. Afterwards, he told her that he had been after a human trafficking ring who had kidnapped a young boy two days ago. He had walked into a trap at the warehouse where he thought the children were being kept, which was why he had been so beaten up. He then remembered the day that Silke ((Peter Gerety) and Roscoe Sweeney (Kevin Nagle) informed “Battlin’” Jack Murdock (John Patrick Hayden) that they had gotten him a match with Creed. He told him to throw it on the fifth round. His father was pretty good at taking a beating.
He then became more alert as he had noticed that one of the Russians who was tracking him down was going from door to door. He knew this as he could smell him.
The man, Semyon (Aley Falberg), then presented himself as a police detective, and since he didn’t believe Claire when she told him that she hadn’t seen anything, Matt took a fire extinguisher and knocked him out with it. He then got Santino to help him and Claire bring Semyon to the rooftop for interrogation.
Meanwhile, Foggy and Karen went to Josie’s as their last bar. There, Karen revealed to him that she was too terrified of the city because of what had happened and that she couldn’t also go home because of that as well. Foggy then decided to accompany her all night, in which they got drunk and tried Matt at his apartment. Afterwards, she thanked Foggy and told him to go home.
On the rooftop, Claire told Matt that she couldn’t participate in such violence. She revealed to him that she had helped him because, as an Emergency Room nurse, she had heard of him. Wearing a white mask, she helped torture Semyon and watched as Matt tipped him over the edge of the building in order to get the address he needed. Afterwards, he threw him in the dumpster. Claire told him that she didn’t believe in what he had said that he enjoyed torturing people. He then told her to move out, and learned the address of her other apartment just in case he needed medical help again.
He then remembered that his father had decided not to throw the fight against Creel, and ran towards the gym after watching his father win on television, as he had heard a gunshot ring out, and discovered his father lying dead in an alleyway.
He then went to the address that had been given to him, and fought of an entire crew of Russian mobsters. Afterwards, he rescued the young boy and carried him home.
