The episode began with a ninja in red, Nobu (Peter Shinkoda), fighting with Matthew “Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), who was dressed as the vigilante.
Two days beforehand, Matt paid a visit to the church in his area and took Father Lantom (Peter McRobbie) up on his invitation to have coffee. While there, Matt asked him if he believed in the existence of the devil. In response, the good priest told him a story about his time in Rwanda, and told him that he did believe that the devil does exist, and that the devil did indeed walk among humankind.
Back at the office, Matt was formally introduced to Ben Urich (Vondie Curtis-Hall), who told them that the man in the mask had given him evidence which he couldn’t print as no one else could corroborate the story. Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) suggested that they dig into Wilson Fisk’s (Vincent D’Onofrio) past, and they managed to connect Fisk to Confederate Global, as Westmeyer-Holt, a subsidiary of Confederate Global, was the one strong-arming people like Mrs. Elena Cardenas (Judith Delgado).
Meanwhile, at an abandoned warehouse, Nobu insisted that they be given the block where the tenements were. Fisk then asked that Nobu’s organization take care of the vigilante in return. Meanwhile, James Wesley (Toby Leonard Moore) informed Fisk that Detective Hoffman was currently in the wind.
Back at the office, Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) told them that they couldn’t tie the tenement case to Fisk as Confederate Global had just bought the tenements that morning. Elena then came in and told them that Fisk had doubled the rent as was giving a generous offer. Matt suggested that they take it, but Foggy encouraged her as she believed that she could rally enough neighbors to not agree to it. Matt then told Foggy and Karen to keep digging, and decided to go to Vanessa Marianna’s (Ayelet Zurer) art gallery after discovering that she was connected to Fisk.
At the gallery, he asked her what her boyfriend’s taste in art was, and was told to ask him himself, as Fisk had arrived. There, Fisk told him that he was passionate about changing the city as he believed in its full potential, just like Matt.
Afterwards, he spoke again to Father Lantom who told him that he believed that Matt was struggling with the fact that he might have to kill Fisk or that he was struggling with the fact that he didn’t want to kill Fisk, but wanted to. He also told him that he might have visited Vanessa to find a reason not to kill Fisk.
The next morning, the trio hit another dead end, but celebrated a little as Matt’s and Foggy’s name plate for their door had come in. However, their celebration was cut short after Sergeant Brett Mahoney (Royce Johnson) informed them that Elena had died, as her purse had been snatched by a junkie, who stabbed her multiple times. They then knew that it was connected to Fisk, who appeared on television and told everyone that he mourned Elena’s death.
Because of this, and Karen’s desire to have Fisk pay for everything he had done, Matt decided to don his vigilante suit, and beat up several junkies until he came to the junkie that killed Elena, who told him that he had been taken to an abandoned warehouse on the pier.
There, he encountered Nobu in his ninja garb, who realized that Matt had been trained in the ways of the ninja. Nobu then managed to slice Matt up pretty good with his weapons, but as one of Matt’s sticks hit a lamp whose bulb burst, Nobu ended up burning to his death, which was applauded by Fisk. Fisk then explained that he had set up this trap perfectly, as he knew that the vigilante had a soft spot for the elderly, women and children. Exhausted, Matt tried to fight Fisk, who defeated him and expressed his disappointment. However, before James Wesley (Toby Leonard Moore) could shoot him, Matt disappeared into the water.
A drunk Foggy , who was banging on Matt’s apartment door, became alarmed when he heard a crash from inside. He then saw the man in the mask who collapsed at his feet. He then began to dial 911, but stopped after he realized that there was something familiar about the vigilante. He then pulled of the black mask which revealed that the vigilante was none other than his partner and best friend-Matt Murdock.
